Paul McCartney Tour Press Release:

Paul McCartney to End World Tour in Liverpool
Wed Apr 30, 7:55 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney will end his year-long world tour in his home town of Liverpool, birthplace of the Fab Four.

The last show takes place on June 1 near the banks of the River Mersey.

"I've been touring this show all around the world and we've been having a great time -- but it will be very special for me to now bring it on home to Liverpool," McCartney said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I've a feeling it will be a good and emotional ending to a wonderful year," he added.

McCartney began his tour in Oakland, California, in April 2002, playing 58 concerts in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan.

Last month he began the 32-show European leg of the tour which includes concerts in Rome's Colosseum and Moscow's Red Square, before ending in Liverpool.

By the time the tour ends, nearly two million people will have paid to see the ex-Beatle play.

John Lennon's Imagine on ULTRADISC II Gold CD

Sebastopol, CA – Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) is extremely proud to announce the
forthcoming release of John Lennon’s Imagine on its revamped ULTRADISC II™ Gold CD series.

The music and message of this timeless masterpiece is fully realized via Mobile Fidelity's proprietary GAIN 2™ (Great Ambient Information Network) mastering process which enables the maximum amount of musical information to be extracted from the master media. This information is then stored transparently as a pure Direct Stream Digital (DSD) signal that is down converted by a powerful conversion process to Gold CD.

Utilizing updated remixes supervised by Yoko Ono herself, classic tracks such as “Imagine” and “Jealous Guy” are unveiled with sparkling detail and spectacular resolution. Listeners will literally surrender to the delicacy of “Oh My Love” and rally to protest anthems such as “Give Me Some Truth” and “I Don’t Want To Be A Soldier” as forgotten idealism is rekindled. From ferocity to fragility, MFSL’s mastering accompanies and refines the wide emotional range and sheer beauty that comprises Phil Spector's tasteful production of John Lennon’s Imagine.

ULTRADISC II™ Gold CDs from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab are a genuine phenomenon. Sealed copies often command astronomical prices on auction sites such as E-bay and ULTRADISC II™ versions of classic albums are generally considered unrivaled as the ultimate achievement in CD sound quality. MFSL's version of Imagine follows as the latest in a tradition of ultrasonic excellence appealing to music enthusiasts, collectors, and audiophiles alike.

First New George Harrison Music Video in 15 Years to Be Released

Entertainment Editors

HOLLYWOOD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2003--

If you don't know where you're going Any road will take you there

One of the standout tracks from the acclaimed "Brainwashed" album, "Any Road," on Dark Horse/EMI, will be serviced to radio next week.

The accompanying promo video includes previously unreleased footage that lovingly celebrates George's life. His humor and spirit are captured in the studio, in concert, casual shots and animated footage. "Any Road" is the first new George Harrison music video since "This is Love" from Cloud Nine in 1988.

Written by George Harrison, "Any Road" is produced by George, Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison. The track features George on slide and acoustic guitars and banjulele; Jeff Lynne on bass, piano and backing vocals; Dhani Harrison on electric guitar and backing vocals; and Jim Keltner on drums.

Critics have embraced the album. Rolling Stone magazine gave the record a four star review, saying, "`Brainwashed' is a warm, frank goodbye. Fear and acceptance run together in these songs, anger as well as serenity. Most importantly, there are lots of guitars. Harrison died before he could finish 'Brainwashed.' But his co-producers -- his son Dhani and ELO's Jeff Lynne -- have completed the album with impressive sensitivity, to the point that Harrison feels immensely present ... It is a fine, enchanting epitaph."

The New York Times said, "The music is vintage Harrison: laid-back but by no means
underpowered, with melodies tugged between major and minor keys, and lyrics that are filled with humorous wordplay but are also cuttingly direct. Harrison's trademark slide guitar shines through everywhere and is particularly fluid in the instrumental `Marwa Blues' and at the start of 'Stuck Inside a Cloud.' This is not a guitarist who retired to the garden."

Here's the full press release from Capitol Records:

PR Newswire: The Beatles Anthology DVD Debuts at Number 1

LOS ANGELES, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beatles Anthology DVD, released April 1, 2003, debuts at the number one position on Billboard's DVD MusicVideo Chart and on the Music Video Chart, having sold nearly 59,000 units in the first week. This is the biggest Music Video DVD boxset debut in the soundscan era.

The Beatles Anthology DVD is the apogee of a series, which continues to break records. The Beatles Anthology was first shown in 1995, when John, Paul, George and Ringo told The Beatles' story for the first time. The Anthology project caused a worldwide sensation as it launched the highest rated worldwide broadcast television event of the year. Directly following the TV special came three double-CD sets, all of which consecutively debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard charts, and which featured the first new Beatles recordings in 25 years -- "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". In 1996, they released the series on VHS, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Music Video Chart, and in 1997, won 3 Grammy Awards -- Best Music Video Long Form for the Anthology VHS Box Set, and Best Music Video Short Form as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the single "Free As A Bird". In 2000 Chronicle books published the best selling Beatles Anthology, which is now available in paperback.

The Beatles Anthology DVD boxset features all of the original eight episodes that candidly reveal the story of how the four lads from Liverpool changed everything. All 10 hours of the original Anthology series are on four DVD discs, but the boxset has an additional 81-minute fifth disc of special features which include the last jam session of Paul, George and Ringo playing non-Beatles material. Nearly all the footage on the special features disc has never been seen before.

Technically, the DVDs offer a spectacular audio/visual experience, featuring re-graded picture quality and new audio mastering including 5.1-surround sound and a new stereo PCM soundtrack.

"Like all great artists, The Beatles' music is timeless and their story continues to be relevant to all music lovers," says Capitol Records President and CEO Andrew Slater.

The Beatles catalog has taken major jumps on the Billboard Pop Catalog Chart this week, including the return to the #1 chart position for the Beatles 1 CD, with sales now approaching 9 million copies in the US alone.

Paul McCartney "Back In The World" Tour Update: BBC - Manchester Music - Paul McCartney @ MEN Arena - According to the setlist (see article sidebar), Paul dropped "Driving Rain," "Coming Up" and "Maybe I'm Amazed" and replaced them with "Things We Said Today", "Two of Us" and "I've Just Seen a Face" - possibly to preserve his voice.

This, along with "Birthday" already being performed on the European leg of the tour, makes it difficult to be a completist of Paul's live performances . Related Articles: Liverpool Echo - Macca is Manc-nificent .

March 19th, 2003 - Paul McCartney is finally "Back In The USSR": During a 30 minute webcast held earlier today, Paul McCartney announced plans to perform in a open air concert in Moscow's Red Square on May 24th. It will be the first time McCartney has ever performed in Russia.

The webcast will be archived for those who missed the live event. Check back here for transcript and video on demand links as they become available. MSN is holding a contest in which the winner participates in the pre concert performance.

McCartney is currently rehearsing at the Docklands in London for his European tour which begins on March 25th in Paris.

The following press release was posted to www.paulmccartney.com:

TO RUSSIA, WITH LUV - PAUL ANNOUNCES RUSSIAN SHOW LIVE ON MSN
PAUL McCARTNEY TO PLAY HIS FIRST-EVER RUSSIAN CONCERT FOR 100,000 FANS IN MOSCOW'S RED SQUARE

PAUL McCARTNEY is to play his first-ever concert in Russia - performing to 100,000 people in Moscow's Red Square on May 24th

The announcement finally marks the end of a 40-year wait for Russian fans who grew up in the former Soviet Union where Beatles and Wings songs were banned across the U.S.S.R.

The giant show will also mark a personal dream-come-true for Paul McCartney, who wrote The Beatles' rocker Back In The U.S.S.R. in the Sixties.

"I've long wanted to play in Russia but for a number of years when the Communists were in power, they didn't want me to. I'm delighted that at last I can play there", said Paul, who made the announcement today (Wednesday) during a MSN global online chat with fans on the eve of the start of the European leg of his Back In The World tour. Paul McCartney's
new show caused crowd mania last year in Mexico, Japan and America - where it was dubbed "the greatest hits show on Earth".

During the Sixties and Seventies The Beatles were banned by the Soviet powers. Radio play of Beatles songs was forbidden, newspapers could not write about the group, there were no TV broadcasts about The Beatles and stores were not allowed to sell their albums. Although the Soviet allowed airplay and the sale of records by other artists including Elvis Presley and Rolling Stones, The Beatles were forbidden as the freedom of thought in their songs was deemed to be seditious to the Communist state.

But now Russia will at last get the show that the Soviets didn't want the people to see. And the concert planned for Moscow will make up for the wait - Paul McCartney's Russian gig will include more than 20 Beatles classics in the 36-song, three-hour-long all-hits set that will span Paul's Beatles, Wings and solo career.

Said Paul: "I've never even visited Russia as a tourist, so it's exciting for me now to be getting to perform there with a band and finally be singing Back In The U.S.S.R. and all these other songs for people who, I've got a feeling, might just be ready for it".

And as a bonus, during the MSN chat today Paul announced a competition for one fan to win a prize of not only attending the Moscow show - but also to be in the show, onstage in front of the 100,000 crowd as one of the pre-show troupe of dancers and theatrical performers. For details of the competition, go to www.msn.co.uk/mccartney/

The Moscow concert will be Paul McCartney's only show in Russia on his Back In The World tour - which starts its European leg in Paris next Tuesday, March 25th. The launch of the three-month trek coincides with the EMI release of two special souvenirs of the tour - a 37-song live album, titled Back In The World, and Back In The U.S. - a 3-hour DVD
filmed inside the world tour during its run across America.

Fronting a lean new band, Paul will perform his acclaimed and hugely-successful new show that last year broke box office records in 21 cities during its 50-date tour of America. The tour won Billboard magazine's Tour Of The Year accolade as the most triumphant concert trek of 2002.

Paul McCartney's new show caused crowd mania last year in Mexico, Japan and America - where it was dubbed "the greatest hits show on Earth".

The show includes 22 Beatles songs - the most Beatles songs ever performed anywhere in any one show - plus more than a dozen hits from his Wings and solo periods.

The Back In The World 2-CD album follows the hit album Back In The U.S. which was recently released in America as a souvenir of the first U.S. leg of the world tour. As the set list for the European tour will differ from the first American shows, the Back In The World tracklist has been changed so that the European album is a proper souvenir of the European show. The Back In The World album will feature four songs not released before: live performances of She's Leaving Home, Calico Skies, Michelle and Let 'Em In.

These will feature alongside such classics as All My Loving, Back In The USSR, Band On The Run, Blackbird, Can't Buy Me Love, Carry That Weight, Coming Up, Eleanor Rigby, Fool On The Hill, Getting Better, Hello Goodbye, Here There And Everywhere, Hey Jude, I Saw Her Standing There, Jet, Live And Let Die and many others.

The Back In The U.S. DVD was previously only available in the U.S.A. and Japan, where it has already been a huge hit with fans as sales in America alone have been of triple-platinum status. The DVD has been dubbed "a rock and road movie" as it records not only the onstage concert action but also takes the viewer right inside the tour; filming Paul, the band and roadcrew backstage and offstage, inside dressing rooms, in the limos with Paul and even aboard his chartered jet for after-show mile-high party antics.

The 'Back In The World' concert show will include performance of Beatles songs never before played live in Europe.

Said Paul McCartney: "I had a lot of fun touring this show across America last year and instead of been exhausted I felt exhilarated because I am enjoying it so much. I'm looking forward to playing through Europe, taking the show to new faces in new places.

"I think the crowd in Moscow is going to like this gig - when I was thinking of what songs to play I just imagined myself as one of the audience and thought 'What would I like to hear him play?”

"So that means we'll be playing some of my Beatles stuff - rather a lot of Beatles stuff, actually - some Wings stuff and some more recent stuff; so basically the show pretty much spans my whole career. And I'm really getting off on playing it all with my new band, their energy and musicianship is phenomenal".

Paul McCartney's new band features Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray on guitars, Paul 'Wix' Wickens on keyboards and Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums.

Paul McCartney's world tour, his most successful since The Beatles, began in Oakland, California, in April 2002. It has played through the USA, Canada, Mexico and Japan, 58 concerts in 37 cities, performing to one million people during 18 weeks on the road. Paul McCartney's 'Back In The World Tour' will drive through Europe during March, April, May.

The tour will include concerts in: Paris - March 25. Palais Omnisports Bercy , Barcelona - March 28 & 29. Palau San Jordi, Antwerp - April 1 & 2. Sports Palais, Sheffield - April 5 & 6. March 12, 2003 - Jeff Lynne has posted the following message on the ELO "Face The Music" website regarding his role in the upcoming "Concert For George" DVD:

MESSAGE FROM JEFF

"The 'Concert for George' was the most amazing musical and emotional night I've ever experienced.

The stage of the Albert Hall looked like a great Indian palace, with a twenty foot tall picture of George directly above. Everyone said they could feel his presence in the atmosphere.

George was a great friend and a hero to me, and the evening was a fantastic celebration of his life, and what a line-up! It really was brilliant to be playing with this lot.

I even got to sing one of my favourite George songs, 'The Inner Light'. This was a big honour for me, to sing with Anoushka Shankar playing sitar, and Ravi Shankar conducting!

At the moment we're mixing the second half of the show (the rock & roll part). That might sound simple enough, except for the fact that it was recorded on ninety six tracks!

On 'Wah-Wah' there are three drummers, two bass players, seven guitarists, three keyboard players, ten piece string section, two sax players, two percussionists, two female backing singers, with Eric Clapton, Gary Brooker, Andy Fairweather-Low, Paul McCartney, Billy Preston, Dhani Harrison, Tom Petty & me all singing. At the same time! It takes some mixing, I can tell you.

We're going to be working on this for quite some time, with Ryan engineering & Marc occasionally. Marc also played lead & rhythm guitar in the concert. It was a great bunch of guys to work with.

When it's all finished it will be on DVD in surround sound.

Love from Jeff Lynne" (Photo)

PAUL McCARTNEY BACK ON TOUR
FIRST UK-EURO CONCERTS IN 10 YEARS
+ NEW LIVE ALBUM + NEW TOUR DVD - MARCH 17TH

PAUL McCARTNEY is to play his first UK and European concerts in 10 years when his
highly-demanded 'Back In The World' tour kicks off in Paris on March 25th.

The launch of the three-month trek will coincide with the release on March 17th of two special souvenirs of the tour - a 37-song live album, titled Back In The World, and Back In The U.S. - a 3-hour DVD filmed inside the world ttour during its run across America.

The European tour, which will play include gigs in Paris, Barcelona, Arnhem, Koln, Hannover, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Dublin, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham and London, will be Paul first in since his New World Tour of 1993.

Fronting a lean new band, Paul will perform his acclaimed and hugely-successful new show that last year broke 20 box office records during its 50-date tour of America. The tour won Billboard magazine's Tour of The Year accolade as the most triumphant concert trek of 2002.

Paul McCartney's two and a half hour, 36-song show caused crowd mania last year in Mexico, Japan and America - where it was dubbed "the greatest hitss show on Earth".

The show includes 22 Beatles songs - the most Beatles songs ever performed in any one show - plus more than a dozen hits from his Wings and solo periods.

Said Paul: "I had a lot of fun touring this show across America last year and instead of been exhausted I felt exhilarated because I am enjoying it so much. I'm looking forward to playing through Europe and bringing the show back home to Britain.

"I think the crowd is going to like this gig - when I was thinking of what songs to play I just

EMI's press release for the Beatles Anthology:

At Last 'The Beatles Anthology' on DVD
Tuesday February 18, 11:57 am ET

LONDON, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- On March 31st, eight years after The Beatles themselves told the story of the world's greatest rock and roll band in "The Beatles Anthology," EMI will release the complete work on DVD -- but now featuring the final
chapter; never-released footage of the last jam session of Paul, George and Ringo, playing non-Beatles material.

"The Beatles Anthology" DVD boxset features all of the original eight episodes that candidly reveal the story of how the four lads from Liverpool changed everything.

"The Beatles Anthology" was shown in 1995, when John, Paul, George and Ringo told The Beatles' story for the first time. At that time the Anthology project caused a worldwide sensation as it launched a TV series, three double-CD sets that each topped the album charts in the USA, plus "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" -- the first new Beatles recordings in 25 years. All 10 hours of the original Anthology series will now be released
across four DVD discs, plus an additional disc with 81 minutes of Special Features. Nearly all of the material included on this 5th disc has never been seen before.

For years, rumour has been rife among fans of the existence of intimate footage of Paul, George and Ringo jamming together during breaks in the making of the Anthology. This session and other get-togethers were filmed over a 12-month period when the three Beatles met in private and at Abbey Road studios. It includes the trio warmly remembering personal moments from their early days, reflecting on how they made their music and footage of them shot in the studio as they recorded "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love."

David Munns of EMI Recorded Music said: "We are really pleased to be releasing 'The Beatles Anthology,' which tells the story of their lives and careers in the medium of DVD. This was always a great series and the Special Features Disc will be a huge addition to the collection of any music lover and Beatles fan -- it provides an intimate and fascinating chapter to the story that continues to captivate the world."

Technically, the DVDs offer a spectacular audio/visual experience, featuring re-graded picture quality and new audio mastering including 5.1-surround sound and a new stereo PCM soundtrack.

The Beatles Anthology DVD will be released on March 31st, 2003.

February 18, 2003 - 1st Update: The Sun Newspaper Online - 3 Beatles in secret reunion: This article partially describes the bonus DVD which is being included in the DVD reissue of the Beatles Anthology. The bonus disc will include the Paul, George and Ringo jam session that was held at Friar Park on June 23 1994. A brief segment of this jam sesssion - their performance of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" - was broadcast on "Good Morning America" in December of 1995. In spite of what the Sun article infers, we can still expect an April 1st release date.

The bonus disc will also include additional interview footage with Paul, George and Ringo, as well as George Martin, Neil Aspinall and Derek Taylor. There is also a "behind the scenes" look at the making of "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" as well as production footage of the Beatles Anthology. More details on the bonus disc is available at Jorie Gracen's web site .

A Beatles Anthology reference is also included in the following Paul McCartney press release(s):

AP: Paul McCartney Announces New World Tour

LONDON - Beatles fans received a double treat on Tuesday with announcements of a new world tour by Paul McCartney (news) and the release of a DVD of a 1994 jam session by McCartney, Ringo Starr (news) and George Harrison.

McCartney said he plans to include a large package of Beatles songs in his first British tour in a decade, scheduling 22 songs from his Fab Four days for each two-and-a-half hour arena concert.

Seven dates in April have been announced for the "Back in the World" tour, including stops in London and in Manchester, northern England. McCartney then plans to tour France, Spain, Germany and Scandinavia.

The world tour follows McCartney's successful 2002 "Back In The U.S." tour — a series of performances that brought him Billboard magazine's Tour Of The Year prize.

"I had a lot of fun touring this show around America last year, but now I'm bringing it home, and that's special to me as I always look forward to playing to a home crowd," McCartney said in a statement.

He said he has learned to give audiences what they want.

"So that means we'll be playing some of my Beatles stuff — rather a lot of Beatles stuff, actually — some Wings stuff and some more recent stuff. So basically the show pretty much spans my whole career," he said.

McCartney said he would give some Beatles classics a contemporary twist. "There are a couple of numbers that I hope we might be able to reinvent," he said.

Tickets for the concerts go on sale Friday, priced 35 to 45 pounds (US$56 to $72).

Fans also will be able to purchase a DVD of the reunion performance by McCartney, Starr and Harrison that was filmed in 1994. It was the only time the three played together after the band split up in 1970.

Harrison died in Nov. 2001, after a long battle with cancer. John Lennon, the fourth Beatle, was shot dead in New York in 1980.

Due to be released at the end of March, the hour-long DVD was shot at Harrison's studios at his mansion in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. The songs are mainly staples from their early performing days, including "Blue Moon Of Kentucky," "Ain't She Sweet" and "Thinking of Linking."

A spokesman for McCartney told the British Broadcasting Corp. that the jam session was "really sweet. It's five old songs that they would have played in the days before the Beatles. It's really nice footage."

Double Dose of Beatles for Fab Four Fans
Tue Feb 18, 7:51 AM ET
By Jason Hopps

LONDON (Reuters) - Beatles fans had two reasons to twist and shout on Tuesday with announcements of a Europe-wide tour by Paul McCartney (news) and the release of a never-before seen video of three Beatles jamming together.

Fresh from a hugely popular North American tour, McCartney said he would kick-off his first British tour in 10 years in April, with gigs featuring 22 Beatles songs from "All My Loving" to "Let It Be."

His "Back In The World" series of marathon concerts -- each nearly three hours long -- will also hit European cities in France, Spain, Germany and Scandinavia.

"I had a lot of fun touring this show around America last year, but now I'm bringing it on home and that's special to me as I always look forward to playing to a home crowd," McCartney, 60, said in a statement.

"We'll be playing some of my Beatles stuff -- rather a lot of Beatles stuff, actually -- some Wings stuff and some more recent stuff, so basically the show pretty much spans my whole career," he added.

His sweep through Canada, the United States, Mexico and Japan last year broke sales records and was hailed by Billboard Magazine as the tour of the year.

For Beatles fans unable to get their hands on a concert ticket, a reunion performance by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr (news) and George Harrison filmed in 1994 will be released on DVD in March.

The session was filmed at Harrison's studios at his mansion in Oxfordshire, England and is the only time the three played together after the Beatles split in 1970.

A small segment of the footage was featured in the 1996 Beatles Anthology Video.

John Lennon was shot and killed outside his New York apartment in December, 1980 and Harrison lost a battle with throat cancer in November, 2001.

More recently, McCartney has been involved in a dispute with Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono (news), after he reversed the credits on his latest album from the traditional "Lennon-McCartney" to "By Paul McCartney and John Lennon."

McCartney has said he was not worried about Ono's displeasure at the credit reversal and called the spat a "long-running and rather silly dispute."

February 14, 2003 - For the 2nd time this year, police have recovered stolen Beatles tapes. The tapes were recovered by Australian authorities after detectives and pirate music investigators raided a home in western Sydney.

In this instance, the reel-to-reel tapes are believed to be stolen masters from the "Abbey Road" album and "The Beatles" (a.k.a. "The White Album"). The tapes are reported to have been stolen 35 years ago from Abbey Road Studios in London. A preliminary examination of the tapes suggest they are either original studio recordings or professionally made copies. Police have referred the tapes to a musicologist to determine their authenticity.

Paul McCartney Tour Update: The European tour announcement that was expected today has been postponed until next week.

Paul McCartney's "Back In The World" CD: Paul McCartney is releasing the European edition of his Live 2002 CD retitled "Back In The World". "Back In The World" will be released on March 17th to coincide with the beginning of  Paul's "Driving Europe" tour.

"Back In The World" has a different track listing compared to the US version and will include songs from the 2nd leg of the "Back in the US" tour, "Driving Japan" and "Driving Mexico" tours.

To add to what's bound to be a confusing situation, the "Back In The US" version of Live 2002 will be released in the UK on March 10th. However, "Back In the World" is being released on March 29th, in Japan, making Japan the one country to have commercial access to both versions ("Live In The US" was released in Japan last year, a few weeks prior to it's North American release).

KOCH Entertainment Proudly Announces the March 25 Release Of Ringo Starr's Ringo Rama

Thursday January 30, 10:47 am ET

NEW YORK, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The following release was written by David Wild for KOCH Entertainment:

Ultimately what's most impressive about Ringo Starr isn't what he's been, but rather who he is. And with his wonderfully infectious and intimate new album, Ringo Rama, Starr and his close-knit team of collaborators have created a characteristically charming reflection of who Ringo Starr is in the present tense. The man's great heart and soul, his wit and wisdom all come through loud and clear throughout Ringo Rama.
(Logo:http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020312/KOCHLOGO )

"There is a lot of me in these songs," Starr says. "As time goes on, my personality is coming out more and more in the music. That's just what happens. On this album my drumming is more dynamic, I'm more to the front, I think I'm singing better and I believe we're writing better songs. All the touring helps because then you're keeping your chops up. I suppose I had a long time off and now I've had a long time on."

A grown-up thrill ride, Ringo Rama lovingly and at times movingly celebrates yesterday and today. This is a song cycle that appropriately acknowledges the former Beatle's illustrious past but at the same time powerfully insists on the paramount importance of living and loving here and now. Ringo Rama would be a fine album without any of its back story. Yet coming from Starr, it feels in a sense like the album of a lifetime. Ever since cleaning up his own act at the end of the Eighties, Starr started touring with his assorted All-Starr bands and recording a series of impressive albums that at long last made good on the tremendous promise of his early post-Beatles efforts. "I had a great cycle with Ringo [1973] and Goodnight Vienna [1974] and then it all went downhill," Starr admits. "And then from the time of Time Takes Time [1992], I started climbing back up the hill. And since then they're all just getting better."

The rock steady drummer is excited to find himself in such a healthy and extended musical groove. "I've said this over and over again, but I love being in a band," Starr explains. "And I love hanging out with a crowd of musicians. And that's what we are and that's what we do. We write them and we record them."

For Ringo Rama, the "we" of which Starr speaks of is a fine group of fellow travelers that includes producer Mark Hudson, and writer/players like Gary Burr, Dean Grakal, Steve Dudas, Jim Cox and Gary Nicholson. There are also some notable guest appearances from old friends like Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Willie Nelson, Shawn Colvin, Timothy B. Schmidt, Van Dyke Parks and Charlie Haden.

The album was recorded largely at Starr's English studio, with a few tracks cut at producer Hudson's tiny studio in Los Angeles. "I refuse to go into a so-called 'real,' stuffy studio anymore," Starr says. "I like to see us all sweat together and feel the music together." Starr credits producer Hudson with helping to create an ideal atmosphere to work and play. "Mainly we have a lot of laughs," he explains. "It's a lot of fun working together. And we can shout at each other without us getting really hurt and leaving the room. Sometimes it gets a bit tense in the studio, but Mark brings a lot of love, a lot of musical talent and a lot of diplomacy within the group in terms of holding us together. We have a team and we hang out. And it just matters how many of us are in the room how many write the song. It's whatever comes up at that minute. It's not all so pre-planned."

The spontaneous, positive spirit at the heart of Starr's work since his days with the Beatles is very much in evidence on Ringo Rama, right from the aggressively peaceful first track
"Eye To Eye" with its opening allusions to Starr's own first solo smash, 1971's "It Don't Come Easy." Like several other tracks on the album, "Eye To Eye" represents an impassioned cry for peace and love in tense, even traumatic times. "To me 'Eye To Eye' sounds like there's a war going on and we're trying to make it a war of love," Starr offers. "I know it's easy to say, but we're trying our best to see eye to eye because then the world would be a better place. With me, the mission all the time is the same - peace and love and four guys sitting around a room writing songs of love."

Another standout on Ringo Rama is a love song of a different sort, "Never Without You" - a luminous, deeply felt tribute to Starr's friend and former bandmate George Harrison. "It was my way - with the help of Gary and Mark - to say how much George meant to me and how much he will be remembered," he says softly. "Gary Nicholson started that song, and Mark brought it over and we realized we could tailor it. George was really on my mind then. I actually tried to get George, John Lennon and Harry Nilsson all into that song. But it got too busy, so I thought I'm just going to do it for George." To play the moving guitar
solo for "Never Without You," Starr reached out to another guitar great and close friend of Harrison. "I called Eric Clapton up and it was great to have him," Starr says. "Eric's on two tracks on the album, but I really wanted him on this song because George loved Eric and Eric loved George. I wanted Eric to come and play that solo because I only wanted people on the track who George knew and loved."

Another major guitar player, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame, appears on the wryly philosophical tune "I Think Therefore I Rock & Roll" and "Missouri Loves Company." For the record, Starr points out that both of these legendary players were not only inspired but also convenient. "We had a funny joke over here," Starr recalls from his home in England, "People would ask, 'So who's on the record?' And we'd say, 'Just a couple of
local guys. You know, like Eric Clapton and Dave Gilmour.' Because they do both live just around the corner."

Certain Ringo Rama songs - like "English Garden" and "Elizabeth Reigns" - reflect the album's British origins. "Elizabeth Reigns" was because when we were recording here the
Queen's Jubilee was going on, and there was this big party where Paul played and lots of other bands too. And it was so in your face. And our American 'cousins' who were staying with me at the time - namely everyone in the band on the record - were so excited about it all. Dean Grakal started the song. And because I thought they've had their day in all honesty myself, I had to put in that verse, 'Six hundred servants/Use her detergent/Scrubbing the Palace floor.' Elizabeth was the last of the great ones, and like the song says, 'we don't really need a king.'" Even closer to home is "English Garden," which
references Ringo's beloved wife Barbara and even the family dog Buster.

As befits an album created by a bunch of Brits and Americans, Ringo Rama also features songs with a decidedly American feel. A lifelong country music lover - witness his classic cover with the Beatles of Buck Owns "Act Naturally" and his 1970 Beaucoup of Blues album - Starr shines on the country-tinged "Write One For Me" which features a strong vocal assist from the one and only Willie Nelson. "That one was done long-distance because I was in England and Willie was touring in America," Starr explains. "But I've met Willie time and time again, and he's a beautiful human being. He's a gentleman who's open to everything - an incredible man."

The hilarious and lovely "Missouri Loves Company" is an excellent, pun-filled road trip of a pop song. "We love the double entendre of the thing," Starr says with a warm laugh.
"For me I wanted it to be a kind of travelogue around America. America is still very romantic to me. Route 66 is very romantic to me too. That's sort of where I came into this thing with Chuck Berry." And the King of Rock & Roll himself is name checked in "Memphis in Your Mind."

"I Think Therefore I Rock & Roll" is another stirring testament to the importance of music in Starr's life. "It's about rock & roll, the blues, just music really," Starr explains. "I love music. I still listen to it. I don't actually listen to that much of what's going on, though you can't doubt Coldplay. I love bands, but I'm not into all these bands from reality shows put together on TV. They haven't put in the time and the energy for it. That stuff is all a bit instant and it sounds a bit instant. In fact, you blink and you've missed them. I do love Eminem. I love that groove he always has and his writing has so much humor"

Finally, just between friends, there's a bonus track at the end of Ringo Rama. "We used to have quite a bit of those little tags on the Beatles albums," Starr remembers. "We'd throw a little something in. So I suppose it's part of that." This time around, Starr's parting shot of love and peace is the short but sweet "I Really Love Her," which he recorded all on his own. "Just one time in my career, I wanted to do it all," he says, laughing. "I'm tired of all my other mates doing everything. So I thought, 'Okay, I'm going to do it all.' So that was a lot of fun for me."

The inspired fun of Ringo Rama is likely to spread this summer when Starr takes the latest set of All-Starrs out on the road. "We're going live again this year," Starr says. "And I promised our promoter David Fishof that I'll play three new songs. So get
ready."

January 1, 2003 -
2003 Predictions

Paul McCartney will extend his tour to the UK and Australia in 2003. There is a possibility that a 3rd leg of the US may be considered. We may also hear a new studio album this year. Paul's performance of "India" during the "Secret Webshow" hints at what direction the new album may take.

Ringo Starr will release a new album in March (working title is "Ringorama"). Song titles include: "Elizabeth Reigns" (about the queen) ; "Missouri Loves Company" and a tribute to George Harrison, "Never Without You" (with Eric Clapton and Roger Waters). The disc has 13 tracks including a song with Willie Nelson plus a bonus track written by Ringo in which he plays all the instruments. The album is produced by Mark Hudson. Ringo will also embark on a 30 city "All-Starr Band" tour. Possible band members include John Waite, Paul Carrick, Sheila E. and the ever reliable Mark Rivera.

During a new interview broadcast on Christmas Eve, Yoko Ono announced that a new box set of Lennon rarities will be released this year. Also, we can expect a remastered "Walls and Bridges."

The "Concert For George" will be televised in the UK early this year followed by a DVD release. Due to the lower than expected sales of "Brainwashed", reissue plans for George's "Dark Horse" catalogue are unknown at this point. A DVD reissue of "The Concert For Bangla Desh" would be welcomed.

Beatles projects include a revised "Let It Be" album and (finally) the film's release on DVD. "The Beatles Anthology" is expected to be reissued on DVD this year.
