2005 Year End
Review - with a prognostication of 2006
It hasn’t been an easy year for Beatles fans awaiting new product. None
of the three possibilities (“Let It Be” on DVD, “Capitol Albums, Vol.
2", or a followup to the successful “1" CD) materialized in 2005 (not
to mention the possibility of upgraded core catalog CDs).
The recent legal action between the Beatles and EMI / Capitol / HMV,
etc. will factor into a product slowdown but the issue is more
complicated, with all parties needing to be in agreement with any
release plan. In any case, the labels involved still need to generate
revenue so this matter can’t drag on indefinitely.
The one definite project for 2006 is the Cirque du Soleil show which
will "celebrate the musical legacy and extraordinary experience of The
Beatles. George Martin is the musical supervisor for this project,
which had the support of George Harrison, shortly before his death.
A good candidate for the most awaited book during the first quarter of
2006 is Geoff Emerick's "Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording
the Music of the Beatles" which will be released on March 16th.
After a flood of Lennon related
books, the conclusion of the Lennon remaster series on CD and the
“Imagine: John Lennon” DVD, we can expect a slowdown in 2006. Not that
everything that needs to come out has emerged. An obvious omission is
“Live In New York” on DVD, as well as many of Lennon’s TV appearances
(Mike Douglas show, Tom Snyder’s “Tomorrow” show, David Frost, etc.).
Fans of the Beatles “Shout” biography will be interested in Philip
Norman’s upcoming biography on Lennon that is still a work in
progress.
A film on John Lennon’s immigration battle to remain in the US, titled
“The U.S. vs. John Lennon” is being produced and is set for release in
2006. It will be co-written, directed and produced by David Leaf and
John Scheinfeld and will examine events in Lennon’s life from 1966-1976.
2006 should see the DVD release
of Paul McCartney’s “U.S.” tour as well as BBC Radio 2's "Sold on Song"
program. Also, expect a third single from the Grammy nominated “Chaos
and Creation In The Backyard” album.
The most activity for Beatles
related releases could come from the Harrison estate.
The new issue of Beatlefan has some news obtained at the recent
screening of "The Concert for Bangla Desh" in L.A.:
At the screening of “The Concert For Bangla Desh” film in L.A., Olivia
Harrison said George “was working on a few projects. He was working on
his own ‘Anthology’. He had been filming to sort of share his view of
the world. One day, I think, that will be done.”
Dhani Harrison said there also will be an “Apple years” box covering
the period from “Wonderwall” to “Extra Texture”, a proper greatest hits
CD, a CD and DVD release of the unreleased 1974 tour film and live
album, and reissues of the non-Harrison Dark Horse catalog. The Apple
box likely will be the next project.
A recent article in “Entertainment Weekly” discussed the almost 10 year
absence of the Traveling Wilbury albums. The article indicated that
these albums will be reissued in 2006 with bonus tracks and a DVD.
As evidenced by the DVD included with the “Dark Horse Years” box set, a
full “Live In Japan” DVD certainly has merit.
A late 2005 publication is Joshua Greene's book, “Here Come The Sun -
The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison”.
In March, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps: The Music of George Harrison”
by Simon Leng will be reissued as a paperback with a update that
includes information on the "Brainwashed" album.
Ringo and the Roundhead’s summer
2005 “Soundstage” performance (to promote “Choose Love”) should be
released on DVD in 2006. Ringo’s ‘superhero’ project with Stan Lee is
also slated to appear on DVD. Late in 2005, Ringo began recruiting
performers for a 2006 “All-Starr Band” tour.
2005 - Year In Review
Here's a compilation of the monthly reviews posted on cyber-beatles

February 25th marks what would have been George Harrison's 62nd
birthday. To commemorate the occasion, Olivia Harrison promotes the
release of the "Concert For George" limited edition book by Genesis
Publications. During various interviews with Australian media, Olivia
mentions several future releases including Harrison's post Beatles
Apple catalogue, the reissue of the Traveling Wilbury albums, a George
Harrison anthology containing rare recordings and outtakes dating back
to 1970 and a home video project. Dhani Harrison is reportedly working
on the anthology set, which has no release date yet. Olivia suggested
that it may take a 5 year time frame to complete these projects.

Billboard Hot 100 Singles. This marks the first time that a Lennon /
McCartney composition has charted in nine years (since "Real Love" in

simply entitled, "John," reportedly a candid account of her time with
Lennon. Cynthia's book is set for a September release. Yoko Ono is also
planning a book, "Memories Of John," more of a commemorative style book
which is set for release in December.
Details are slowly emerging about Paul McCartney's upcoming album,
which according to several sources might be titled "Timelines". A
source close to McCartney reportedly leaked some of the album's song
titles. According to the source, one of the new tunes called "Comfort
Of Love" which reportedly includes a mention of John Lennon. Also
featured is a song called "Bushie-Tushie Jelly Jam" a "reggae-style
George Bush parody" and "I've Got My Magic Back" which sounds like "a
mix between 'Day Tripper' and 'Paperback Writer'."

"Spectacle" has been delayed by Capitol due to the lack of a marketable
single.

introspective, contemplative side to Paul’s muse. The album grows on

be a challenge for some people but it rewards the listener who takes

album is well crafted with an uncluttered simplicity. The degree of
focus and quality control that McCartney exhibits on the disc is
admirable. Paul takes a real stand and make a sincere effort to deliver
