February 28, 2005 - Monthly Review: "On February 2nd, A&E announces that "Paul McCartney in Red Square" will be released on DVD in May (see above for exact date). The DVD is expected to be loaded with extra features.

While Paul and his band were rehearsing for the Super Bowl appearance on February 6th, "Sports Interaction" were taking bets on which songs would be performed.

On February 3rd, Paul McCartney meets the press in Jacksonville, Florida, regarding his appearance at the Super Bowl.

On February 5th, Paul posts a lengthy rebuttal to critics of his wife. The posting is featured on Heather's web site.

In a fine performance, Paul and his band performed "Drive My Car" ; "Get Back" ; "Live And Let Die" (with fireworks) and (an abbreviated) "Hey Jude" during the Super Bowl halftime show. In a 3 minute pre-game interview with Terry Bradsaw, Paul mentioned that his US tour will begin on September 16 in Miami and end on November 30 in Los Angeles.

On February 13th, musicians perform The Beatles "Across the Universe" for tsunami relief during the 47th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. The live performance was made available as a download on iTunes. That same evening, the "Concert For George" DVD won a Grammy for "Best Long Form Music Video.

In mid February, Ringo announces the June release of his upcoming album "Choose Love".
The old working title for the album was "One Leg At A Time". Ringo is also working on the previously announced Stan Lee superhero project and his computer artwork which will be released as a "fine art" special edition later this year.

Promotion also begins for the May 16th DVD release
of Ringo Starr's long out of print 1972 film on Marc Bolan & T-Rex "Born To Boogie". The DVD is reported to include an impressive restoration of the film and 5 hours of bonus features. A 2 disc companion CD will also be issued.

Paul McCartney is awarded at the "NME Shockwave Awards" for Best Live Event for his performance at Glastonbury.

February 25th marks what would have been George Harrison's 62nd birthday. To commemorate the occasion, Olivia Harrison promotes the release of the "Concert For George" limited edition book by Genesis Publications. During various interviews with Australian media, Olivia mentions several future releases including the reissue of the Traveling Wilbury albums, a George Harrison anthology containing rare recordings and a home video project. She suggested that it may take a 5 year time frame to complete these projects.

The Grammy recording of "Across The Universe" debuts at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles. This marks the first time that a Lennon / McCartney composition has charted in nine years (since "Real Love" in 1996).

In an impressive display of speed, the Super Bowl XXXIX DVD, featuring Paul's halftime performance, is announced for release on March 1st, less than a month after the Super Bowl broadcast."

"CONCERT FOR GEORGE" Wins Grammy -- Best Long Form Music Video
Monday February 14, 7:04 pm ET
WSM DVD Celebrates the Life and Music of George Harrison

LOS ANGELES, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 14, 2005 -- In essence, George Harrison and his best pals won another Grammy at last night's 2005 Grammy ceremony in Los Angeles. The moving tribute DVD, "CONCERT FOR GEORGE," won the Grammy for Best Long Form Music Video. In addition, the song "Something" from "CONCERT FOR GEORGE" with Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney was nominated for a Grammy as Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Olivia Harrison was on hand for the ceremony and producer Jon Kamen accepted the award with the emotional comment, "George Harrison is still with us."

Concert For George Grammy WinOn November 29, 2002 -- one year after the passing of music legend George Harrison -- wife Olivia Harrison and longtime friend Eric Clapton organized a performance tribute in his honor. Held at London's Royal Albert Hall, the momentous evening featured George's songs, and music he loved, performed by an all-star lineup that included Clapton, Jools Holland, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Monty Python, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Ringo Starr, and many more.

Warner Strategic Marketing (WSM) celebrates that magical night with the DVD of "CONCERT FOR GEORGE," a double-disc set highlighting the gala event, which was beautifully filmed for posterity and released in a limited theatrical run. Also available is a 2-CD soundtrack consisting of nearly two hours of music from this historic tribute.

Disc one of the DVD contains the complete concert, including performances not featured in the theatrical version. Disc two contains the theatrical version featuring concert highlights, interviews with the performers, rehearsals, and behind-the-scenes footage. Each of the performers had a personal friendship or history with Harrison, and the backstage moments and interviews give a sense of how deeply they felt for him.

Directed by David Leland (whose credits include the feature "Wish You Were Here," HBO's "Band Of Brothers" and the Traveling Wilburys video "Handle With Care"), the "CONCERT FOR GEORGE" DVD captures stunning renditions of some of the most significant music of the 20th century, including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (featuring Clapton on guitar, McCartney on piano and Starr on drums), "Taxman" (performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and "The Inner Light" (covered by Jeff Lynne and Anoushka Shankar). Lynne, Harrison's longtime friend and collaborator, produced the audio elements of the concert, while Clapton oversaw the entire proceedings as Musical Director.

In one memorable segment, Anoushka Shankar conducted a full orchestra of musicians performing a special composition by her father and Harrison's mentor, Ravi Shankar, celebrating Harrison's love of Indian classical music. The piece, entitled "Arpan," means "offering."

Among the other high points are McCartney and Clapton performing a duet of "Something," with Starr on drums; Starr performing his #1 hit "Photograph" (which was cowritten by Harrison); and Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks sitting in with Monty Python (featuring Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Neil Innes) for a hysterical version of "The Lumberjack Song," one of Harrison's favorites.

Harrison's friend Joe Brown played the old standard "I'll See You In My Dreams" to close the emotional evening.

"The Concert For George was all I hoped it would be," said Olivia Harrison. "I don't think I've ever heard a band play with so much emotion and respect."

"CONCERT FOR GEORGE" captures the majesty of Royal Albert Hall from more than a dozen camera locations. The film was shot in high definition and digitally mastered with sound recorded in 5.1 Surround.

BORN TO BOOGIE DVD & CD

Original Motion Picture & Concert Performances
Hours of Rare and Never-Seen-Before Material

May 16th 2005

London, England - Sanctuary Visual Entertainment announce the most significant T.Rex event in over twenty-five years. Set for simultaneous May 16th 2005 release are BORN TO BOOGIE double-DVD and double-CD collections. Eagerly awaited by Marc Bolan, T.Rex and Beatles fans, the DVD includes Ringo Starr’s legendary 1972 film ‘Born to Boogie’, the only two full concerts ever recorded with T.Rex and a wealth of extra material.

In the early ‘70s Ringo’s ‘Born to Boogie’ was shown at cinemas throughout the UK, and had a limited VHS release in the early ‘90s. Since then the film’s fate has been the source of much speculation. Featuring Ringo Starr, Marc Bolan and Elton John with a cameo from Geoffrey Bayldon (Catweazle), only a few well-used 35mm cinema prints of the completed film were thought to survive. Having lain scattered and undiscovered for over 30 years, ‘BORN TO BOOGIE’ finally brings together all the extra material from the filming of Ringo’s epic 1972 rock ‘n’ roll motion picture. At 5 hours and 25 minutes, ‘BORN TO BOOGIE’ DVD, shows T.Rex at the height of their success, bringing Ringo’s visionary film back to its true colour and vibrancy, and revealing hours of material never used in the final cut.

A stunning sound and vision experience ‘Born to Boogie’ has been painstakingly restored and remixed from the original 16-track recordings and original colour film negative. Cleaned, repaired and transferred to high definition video the picture is presented in the best possible condition. The original audio recordings have been remastered by Tony Visconti at his NY studio and encoded in Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1 Surround Sound, and the new DTS 96/24 format. The DVD also includes further rare, never before seen footage throughout the 2 discs and DVD menus.

Almost 2 years in the making, the DVD and CD are a unique opportunity to rediscover the true T.Rex sound. Legendary music producer and close friend of Marc’s, Tony Visconti says of the live T.Rex experience, “[He made] this great music in the spirit of every great rock and roller like Chuck Berry or Little Richard or Elvis, (Bolan) was one of them. He was one of the icons. In the new millennium there are T.Rex sounds everywhere. Every so often you get a new group coming out and ‘oh it's a T.Rex sound’, it's not glam rock, it's T.Rex… glam rock was something else.”

DVD extras stretch to over 90 mins and are presented by Marc’s only son, Rolan Bolan. They feature newly recorded interviews with the sole surviving member from the ’72 T.Rex line-up – drummer, Bill Legend. Also interviewed are Tim Van Rellim (Producer of Born to Boogie and now a Hollywood Exec, responsible for films including ‘A Knights Tale’), Tony Visconti, Geoffrey Bayldon (famous for playing Catweazle), Radio institution Bob Harris, photographer Keith Morris, Wembley Compere Emperor Rosko, Mick Gray (Roadie) and fans of T.Rex. Also included is unique cine-8 footage recorded by Marc of T.Rex on the road, plus equally unique footage of Marc and Ringo backstage between performances at the Wembley gigs.

Tony Visconti, “When I first knew [Marc] we were walking around with holes in our jeans… and I stuck with him through all those times and having those concerts filmed by Ringo Starr was the apex of my career and I know his. This is everything we worked for came true… it was such an exciting time for all of us; it was the beginning of a new era... No one quite had the impact since then.... Marc was definitely one of those people who changed things forever… things were never the same after that.”

Excerpts from the evening concert at Wembley formed the base of Ringo’s film; the DVD restores this concert to its original length and order, including 3 extra tracks, ‘Cadilac, Girl’ and ‘Summertime Blues’. The matinee performance has not been seen since T.Rex performed it in front of 10,000 screaming fans in 1972. It is presented here for the first time ever. Original T. Rex producer Tony Visconti recorded both gigs from a truck outside the Wembley venue. “This was the ONLY time I recorded them live”, says Tony. The precious original multi-track recordings lay gathering dust for over thirty years until being rediscovered for this project after months of searching. Visconti was the natural choice to re-mix the audio for this DVD, a job lovingly undertaken at the NY studio he shares with David Bowie.

Slated for simultaneous release, ‘BORN TO BOOGIE’ CD is a 2-disc set, including the restored soundtrack for Ringo’s film, the previously unheard matinee concert from 18th March 1972, as recorded and remixed (over 30 years apart) by Tony Visconti. Also included is a 12 minute ultra-rare interview with Marc from late 1971, not included on the DVD.

* * * * *

T.Rex, Thin Lizzy and David Bowie became renowned worldwide for breaking new musical ground at a time when ‘flower power and check shirts weren’t working for anybody anymore’. Considering Marc’s departure overseas in the mid-70s and untimely death in 1977, the story of the success of T.Rex is all the more remarkable. At the height of their success in 1972, newspapers famously referred to T.Rex as being “Bigger than the Beatles”. By 1972, the band was reportedly able to sell up to 100,000 records per day.

While their work in the studio created an unmistakable sound, the live experience was transforming. In concert, T.Rex displayed a raw power that would have stunned anyone who had only previously heard the gentle sounds of Marc’s previous band – Tyrannosaurus Rex. Taking the opportunity to bring something new to fans, in concert Marc loved to turn electric songs into acoustic numbers and transform studio recordings in to raw rock ‘n’ roll experiences.

Paul McCartney performs at Super Bowl Halftime ShowFebruary 6, 2005 (2nd Update) - Paul performs at the Super Bowl halftime show:

Paul and his band performed "Drive My Car" ; "Get Back" ; "Live And Let Die" (with fireworks) and (an abbreviated) "Hey Jude" during the Super Bowl halftime show.

A fine, highly polished performance (
"Drive My Car" was note perfect), however brief (lasting less than 20 minutes). Great sound for a televised broadcast. The crowd reaction was genuinely enthusiastic. Having three fast songs in a row was a good choice for this event. The tightly regulated proceedings definitely had people wanting more.

Update:
In a 3 minute pre-game interview with Terry Bradsaw, Paul mentioned that his US tour will begin on September 16 in Miami and end on November 30 in Los Angeles. More photos .

Note from Paul

Over the years people have written so much stuff about me. Some of it is good and some true, but much of it is inaccurate and leads some people to form a distorted view of me and those I love.

Normally I ignore it, telling myself that I can’t answer every single point and that most people know better than to believe it, and prefer to make up their own minds based on what they know to be true. Sometimes, however, these inaccurate articles affect my family and friends, and it is then that I’m tempted to put the record straight.

One person in particular, that some of the media can be wildly wrong about is my wife Heather, and it hurts me to see her wounded by these scurrilous reports, and not have anyone to put the record straight. Because of this I thought that it would be a good idea to tell the people who care about us, and believe in what we do, the truth about some of these ridiculous stories, which are made up by people we have never ever met.

Recently articles have appeared which need correcting, so here are my thoughts on a few of the points mentioned in them.

Heather makes me dye my hair……… not true. It is true that I colour my hair. Wow, Shock Horror! I’ve actually been doing this for many years now with varying degrees of success, but it’s my hair, and if you don’t like the result I’m afraid it’s just too bad, but it’s certainly nothing Heather suggested. I was engaged in this devilish practice years before I met her. I remember a strange blue dye dripping down my forehead on an Australian tour over ten years ago, but let’s face it, if I want to dye my hair pink, that’s up to me and no one else. The suggestion that it was Heather’s doing simply isn’t true.

The split between my former publicist Geoff Baker and me has also been attributed to Heather. The actual truth, which I had been trying to spare him the embarrasment of going public with, was that he had gradually been getting more and more unstable over the past few years. The last straw came when a group of friends and I went late one night to see the magician David Blaine doing a stunt by the side of the River Thames. I was keeping out of sight of a small crowd of photographers when to my horror I saw Geoff pointing me out to the paparazzi who then ran towards me in a feeding frenzy. None of us could understand why he had done this, but it was just another example of his crazy behaviour. After that I tried to let him down gently but it was my decision alone to let him go as I didn’t want that kind of instability around me. It was nothing whatsoever to do with Heather.

The awkward subject of the Lennon McCartney credits on our songs was also put down to Heather’s influence over me but this actually originated at the time of the Beatles Anthology in 1997 when I, foolishly perhaps, asked for my name to come in front of John’s on the one song, Yesterday. The request was turned down and even though I didn’t see why at the time, it’s something that I don’t have a problem with anymore. But it was plainly before Heather’s time and she therefore couldn’t have had anything to do with it.

The media sometimes suggests a rift between my kids and Heather, but in fact we get on great and anyone who knows our family can see this for themselves.

Heather and I recently decided to appear on the quiz show Celebrity Millionaire. It was something we had fun doing and incidentally we raised a substantial amount of money for our landmine charity Adopt a Minefield. It’s an insult to my intelligence to imagine me being coerced into something like that. In fact, were both fans of the programme and we had a good laugh taking part in it.

Heather is also, according to some of these mischevious writers, supposed to encourage me to ‘go to the opening of an envelope’. Really ? Compared to many people we hardly go to anything unless it’s connected with our charity work. Again, anything we do attend is a joint decision.

Some of the stuff that is written is plain malevolence but some of it is so ridiculous that I have to admit it’s funny. One rumour is that Heather has made me have plastic surgery. Now the truth, honest guvner, is that I haven’t had any done, but in flicking through a magazine recently I came across someone who appeared to know better! An LA plastic surgeon had a book out in which he claims I’ve had some work done! OK, now I know it’s not true, but this guy knows better. How ? The proof, he reckons, is that…..wait for it……my ear lobes are too low!…..and, says he, you know how you can tell people have had plastic surgery?……They deny it!!! At first I felt like entering into a long debate with him about it, but it’s so hilarious that I decided not to bother.

Although some of these articles can be funny, there are others that are plain malicious and you need to be strong not to be hurt by some of the cruel suggestions that flow from these people’s pens.

One of the most shocking recent statements was that “losing her leg was perhaps the best thing that ever happened to Heather as it fed her desire for self publicity” Imagine losing a leg, and dealing with it as bravely as Heather has done and having to read that on top of it!

She was reported to always be clinging to me, the inference being that she was too possessive. Never mind the fact that I love her holding my arm, the real truth is that often the surface of a floor or pavement can be dangerous for an amputee to walk on, and a little help from a friend can sometimes be appreciated. These scurrilous writers can’t be bothered to search for the truth of situations like these.

There are so many other misapprehensions that are spread by certain sections of the media that it is impossible to answer them all. I only hope that these words of mine help genuine people to get a clearer view of the realities of our lives, and encourage them to think for themselves, and not give credence to words by people who simply don’t care about the truth.

Thanks for listening.

All the Best,
Paul McCartney.
