Born To Boogie DVD Banner ad

Monthly Summary - May 2005: In Late April, the Beatles became the first act to earn six RIAA diamond awards. The latest is for shipments of 10 million copies (US) for the Beatles “1" album.

An open casting call for the lead male role for a new musical featuring the music of The Beatles was held in Liverpool on May 6th and in London on May 11th. The film is being directed by Julie Taymor, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s "The Lion King" and the Academy Award-winning film "Frida".

The Ringo directed T-Rex “Born To Boogie” film was released as a 2 DVD set in the UK on May 16th. Sanctuary Records held a premiere at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema in London, on April 26th, featuring the DVD’s high quality DTS 96/24 high resolution soundtrack. The “Born To Boogie” DVD is set for North American release on June 7th.

Paul McCartney’s “Twin Freaks” remix album was announced for release on June 21st preceded by a 12" single release of "Really Love You" on June 6th. The original version of "Really Love You," first appeared on the “Flaming Pie” album.

Ringo Starr's computer art will make its debut on June 20th at the first ever exhibition of his work, exclusively on display at Pop International Galleries located in New York City’s Soho district.

The city of Liverpool, birthplace of the Beatles, has a new web site - www.visitbeatlesliverpool.com - dedicated to ensuring that fans make the most of their visit. The web site is part of the city’s initiative to expand Beatles related tourism projects between now and 2008 - with Paul rumored to provide a song for the 2008 celebrations.

In mid May, Rolling Stone magazine detailed Paul’s tour plans and provided details of his upcoming album which will now be issued as a “solo” project in which Paul plays all the instruments.

Paul’s involvement in “Live Aid II” (later officially titled “Live 8") is announced.

The “Lennon” musical was pulled from it’s Boston run for retooling before it’s opening on Broadway in July.

Yoko Ono and many Beatles fans protested UK’s Channel 4's (tasteless) decision to broadcast a documentary on Lennon’s killer around the 25th anniversary of Lennon’s death.

A stamp album which John Lennon compiled as a child was placed on sale by Stanley Gibbons.

At the Chelsea Flower Show, Ringo protests the demolition of his childhood home.

Lexus and Paul McCartney Partner for Upcoming Paul McCartney 'US' Tour

Sold Out Concert Tour Begins September 16

TORRANCE, Calif., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Lexus and Paul McCartney have announced a groundbreaking partnership that names Lexus as presenting sponsor of the Paul McCartney 'US' Tour this fall.  The Lexus tour sponsorship, which will include multiple marketing extension opportunities through March 2006, represents the first time McCartney has ever partnered with a commercial brand in his distinguished career.

"I'm very pleased to partner with Lexus because I think there is a natural fit.  Lexus and I share the same philosophy and approach to creating the best work possible -- me with my music and art and Lexus with the vehicles they create," said McCartney.  "I'm looking forward to a fun and rewarding experience for all."

McCartney will be performing 37 concerts during the 'US' tour, featuring many songs that have not been performed on American soil in the past 15 years. Nearly 300,000 tickets went on sale for this concert series and sold out in record-breaking time in most cities -- some in less than 10 minutes.

"We are excited to present such a highly anticipated event to McCartney fans," says Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager for Lexus. "Paul McCartney is a musical icon who continues to grow and thrive not only as a musician but as an overall creative artist and philanthropist."

Lexus and Paul McCartney have several marketing initiatives in development to support the partnership.  Of particular interest to McCartney -- who is a long-time advocate for environmental causes -- is the Lexus RX 400h, the world's first luxury hybrid SUV.  This vehicle proves that environmental consciousness doesn't have to mean sacrificing performance, luxury or styling.

McCartney will join other celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman -- both of whom chose to arrive at this year's Academy Awards in a Lexus RX 400h -- in championing such an important development in the automotive world.

The RX 400h has been certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle and has an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy rating of 29 mpg, better than the average for compact sedans, and an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 27 mpg and 31 mpg in the city.  The vehicle boasts a V6 engine that delivers V8-like performance and provides a peak system output of 268 horsepower and a 7.3-second 0-to-60 acceleration.

Additional partnership initiatives currently in development include Lexus hospitality areas in select tour cities, ticket giveaways and a special compilation CD created in conjunction with McCartney, to name a few.

May 13, 2005 - Press Release from www.paulmccartney.com - "Paul McCartney In Red Square" DVD update:

PAUL McCARTNEY IN RED SQUARE SET FOR RELEASE JUNE 14

DVD FEATURES EMMY® AWARD-WINNING CONCERT IN RED SQUARE; NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN FULL-LENGTH BONUS CONCERT FROM ST. PETERSBURG’S PALACE SQUARE AND RARE BEHIND THE SCENES FOOTAGE; A&E HOME VIDEO RELEASE FEATURES SONGS OF THE BEATLES, WINGS AND McCARTNEY SOLO YEARS."

NEW YORK, NY, May, 2005 -- As a member of the Beatles, Paul McCartney helped to launch the British Invasion and bring rock and roll onto the global stage. Though their music was banned and The Beatles were never able to visit the U.S.S.R., their music provided hope and inspiration to a beleaguered people. On May 24th, 2003, McCartney ended decades of anticipation with a landmark concert in Russia, electrifying a crowd of over 100,000 jammed into Moscow’s Red Square. Next month, on June 14th, during the 20th anniversary year of Perestroika, A&E Home Video will release McCartney’s history-making, Emmy® Award-winning concert on DVD. More than just a concert film, PAUL McCARTNEY IN RED SQUARE is a backstage pass to a defining moment in rock and roll history.

PAUL McCARTNEY IN RED SQUARE captures the historic sights and sounds of the nearly three-hour concert which included more than 30 classic hits from The Beatles, Wings and McCartney’s solo career. There’s ‘Hey Jude,’ ‘Maybe I’m Amazed,’ ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ ‘Live And Let Die,’ ‘Let It Be,’ ‘Back In The USSR,’ ‘Band On The Run,’ and many, many more. Other DVD bonus features include an interactive menu and guide, as well as previously unreleased concert footage from McCartney’s second trip to Russia, where he performed in St. Petersburg’s Palace Square. Filmed during McCartney’s ’04 Summer Tour,’ fans will be granted their exclusive ticket to see songs never before released including, ‘Helter Skelter,’ ‘Penny Lane,’ and ‘I’ve Got A Feeling.’

McCartney’s songs and records were once condemned as agents of subversion, but for one very special night, his music blasted open the once-impenetrable Iron Curtain and forever changed Russia’s relationship to Western music. PAUL McCARTNEY IN RED SQUARE is also a remarkable historical document featuring rare, behind-the-scenes footage of the star’s whirlwind tour of Russia, including a private meeting with President Putin, and interviews with important members of Russia’s cultural community, who reveal the importance the Beatles and McCartney played in the development of the former Soviet Union’s future.

Destined to become an indispensable part of any music fan’s DVD collection, PAUL McCARTNEY IN RED SQUARE has been digitally-remastered for optimal viewing and features several audio options: Dolby Digital Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, and DTS Digital 5.1 Surround. The director’s cut of the program will feature 20 minutes of never-before-aired footage, along with extras that include a 10-minute featurette from The History Channel®, song selection, an interactive guide and an archival photo gallery, along with an 8-page, full color booklet. But music fans will thrill to one exclusive and unprecedented extra – a full-length, bonus concert from St. Petersburg! The 50-minute long concert from McCartney’s Russian jaunt is every bit as electrifying as Red Square, and gives home audiences another chance to revel in rock and roll history.

For those who spent years under an oppressive regime, rock and roll was an escape from the horrors of everyday life. As President Putin proclaimed of the Beatles’ music, “it was like a gulp of freedom…an open window to the world.” Now, as McCartney readies his Fall 2005 tour, don’t miss out on this concert – a seminal event in rock history – and the ultimate collector’s item for music lovers everywhere. PAUL McCARTNEY IN RED SQUARE was directed by Mark Haefeli.

New Paul McCartney remix project - "Twin Freaks":

From Paul McCartney.com:

TWIN FREAKS NEW SINGLE -'REALLY LOVE YOU'
RELEASED ON GRAZE - 6TH OF JUNE

6th of June sees the release of the debut single ‘Really Love You’ from TWIN FREAKS on the new underground label Graze Records.

‘Really Love You’, a twelve inch only release, is the debut from TWIN FREAKS, featuring the studio wizardry of London based DJ and Producer The Freelance Hellraiser AKA Roy Kerr. Best known for his unforgettable mash-up the 2002 bootleg ‘A Stroke Of Genius’. Hellraiser has since become one of the country’s most sought after remixers and last year caught the eye of music legend Paul McCartney.

In the summer of 2004 Hellraiser toured Europe with Paul McCartney, opening each show with a twenty-five minute set of remixed McCartney tunes, which cumulated in the famous headline performance at Glastonbury.

‘Really Love You’ is a remix of the original track taken from Paul McCartney’s 1997 hit album Flaming Pie. TWIN FREAKS are set to take this McCartney classic to a new audience in clubs across the country this summer.

TWIN FREAKS are in the process of putting the finishing touches to their first full album to be released later in the year. ‘Really Love You’ and ‘Lallula’ are just a taste of what’s to come.

From EMI (UK):

McCartney announces "private project" with English DJ

Former-Beatle Paul McCartney has two new projects up his sleeve for 2005. The first one is his new studio album. The work is being produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead) and will be released in time for the "US" tour that starts in Miami on September 16 and finishes in Los Angeles on November 30.

The other project by McCartney is Twin Freaks. Kept secret until now, the group includes British producer/DJ Freelance Hellraiser, also known as Roy Kerr. The two met prior to McCartney's 2004 summer tour, where Hellraiser opened the concerts with a 25 minute set of McCartney mash-up music.

The Twin Freaks album will be released on June 21st and will be available exclusively in digital format and as a double vinyl 12'' album with a gatefold jacket from EMI (UK).

The first single "Really Love You," is a remix of the original song from the "Flaming Pie" album. The song will be released on June 6th. The project expects to take the McCartney classics to nightclubs around the world."

EXCLUSIVE EXHIBITION OF RINGO STARR’S ART TO OPEN AT NEW YORK’S POP INTERNATIONAL GALLERIES

SUNDAY, JUNE 19-SUNDAY, JULY 3

Ringo Starr's computer art will make its debut June 19 at the first ever exhibition of his work, exclusively on display at Pop International Galleries located in New York City’s Soho district. The show, which was coordinated by Neal Glaser of ArtCelebs, will feature 14 different images, all hand signed by Ringo, and limited to only 100 impressions each. It will open to the public on Sunday, June 19, and launch with a private reception for the artist.

Speaking about his art work Ringo said: “I started in the late nineties with my computer art. While I was touring it gave me something to do in all those crazy hotels you have to stay in on the road.” Adding, with his trademark wit, “most of the titles for my pieces arrived because on computer you have to call them something, so I have. The easy way to look at it is, if it has a hat on - it will probably be called Hat Man.”

Neal Glaser first became aware of Ringo’s artwork in 1995 when he saw the Discover card which featured one of Ringo’s paintings. He was impressed by the “Abstract Face” which he found original, and fun. Neal immediately suggested doing a show of Ringo’s work, but was told that there was not interest in doing anything at that time. Persisting over the years, the show has finally come to fruition. After reviewing dozens of images, they narrowed it down to the 14 featured in this upcoming exhibition at Pop International.

Pop International, who also represent work by other pop icons and artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Dezo Hoffmann, Roy Lichtenstein, Burton Morris, Francesco Scavullo, Andy Warhol and Ronnie Wood (among many others), is a perfect venue for Ringo’s Pop art. Speaking to the nature of pop art Ringo added: “In its way “Pop” art is always changing - like “Pop” artists. It’s a natural move like pop music and even Popeye the sailor man.”

Pop International Galleries is located at 473 West Broadway in New York City. Tel: (212) 533-4262. Fax: (212) 533-6553. The gallery is open 7 days. Monday through Saturday, 10am to 7pm and Sunday 11am to 6pm.

All of the artists proceeds will go to benefit the Lotus US Foundation Charity. The objectives of the Foundation are to fund, support, participate in and promote charitable projects aimed at advancing social welfare in diverse areas including, but not limited to: substance abuse, cerebral palsy, brain tumors, cancer, battered women and their children, homelessness and animals in need.

PR Newswire: An open casting call for the lead male role for a new musical featuring the music of The Beatles will be held in Liverpool on May 6th and in London on May 11th.

LONDON, May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- An open casting call for the lead male role for a new musical featuring the music of The Beatles will be held in Liverpool on May 6th and in London on May 11th.

The film is being directed by Julie Taymor, the Tony Award-winning director of Broadway’s "The Lion King" and the Academy Award-winning film "Frida".

The film is a love story that takes place in England and America set in the turbulent time of the 60’s. The musical features many classic songs by The Beatles.

The casting call is for actors/singers for the role of Jude, a 19-23 year-old Caucasian.

A dock worker in Liverpool, Jude is working-class tough on the exterior, but is also a dreamer and a romantic. His hidden talent is his ability to draw, which comes in the form of wild doodling and comic book fantasies. Raised by his mother, Jude goes to America to find his father. Once there, he finds himself in the turmoil of the sixties and falls in love. Though attractive, there’s much more below the surface.

The applicant needs to be a strong rock/pop singer and should be prepared to perform "Something in the Way She Moves" and "Revolution."

The film will be produced by Revolution Studios ("Black Hawk Down," "Anger Management," "Daddy Day Care," "The Forgotten").

The film is being produced by Matt Gross ("Joe Somebody") and Suzanne and Jennifer Todd ("Memento," "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "Austin Powers in Goldmember," "Boiler Room"). It was written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais ("The Likely Lads," "Porridge," "Going Straight," "The Commitments").

DTS 96/24 High Resolution Audio Brings ``Born to Boogie'' Back to Life

TWYFORD, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2005--In celebration of the launch of the T.Rex "Born to Boogie" DVD, Sanctuary Records held a premiere at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema in London, on 26 April, featuring DTS 96/24 high resolution audio playback. The eagerly awaited, special two-disc release consists of Ringo Starr's legendary 1972 film "Born to Boogie," the only two full concerts ever recorded with T.Rex, and a wealth of extra material. The screening of this epic concert's rare and sometimes unseen footage in DTS 96/24, which offers an unprecedented level of audio quality for multi-channel sound on DVD-Video, was delivered via the XD10 Cinema Media Player, DTS' latest cinema technology for high definition audio and video playback.

"DTS' unique combination of high quality surround technologies developed for home entertainment, in this case DTS 96/24, and robust cinema technology, with the DTS XD10 Cinema Media Player, makes DTS a market leader in bringing alternative content to cinemas," explained David Pope, Director of Business Development, CSS and Pre-Show at DTS.

The recently rediscovered, original analogue audio master tapes of "Born to Boogie" were remastered by legendary music producer Tony Visconti, and subsequently encoded by Sanctuary Post into DTS 96/24. The resulting DVD was screened at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema event through the XD10 Cinema Media Player, allowing the audience to experience this legendary sound as though they were part of the 10,000-member audience present at the live concert 33 years ago.

"I'm a great fan of DTS; it's my format of choice," Tony Visconti commented at the launch party for the title.

The DVD itself also features a DTS 96/24 soundtrack, allowing every consumer with a DTS-enabled home entertainment system to experience the concert movie in the same high quality surround sound audio enjoyed by the many VIPs, stars and press who attended the evening event at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema.

The DVD will be released on 16 May 2005.
