Paul McCartney To Release New Classical Work 'Ecce Cor Meum'

Release Date: September 26th, 2006

NEW YORK, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul McCartney releases his new full-length work of classical music Ecce Cor Meum through EMI Classics on September 26th, 2006. Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart) is Paul's fourth
classical album since his first released in 1991, The Liverpool Oratorio.
Ecce Cor Meum has been more than eight years in the making and its origins follow in the historic tradition of composers that have been commissioned to write music for the world-renowned Magdalen College Oxford.
Paul was specially invited by Anthony Smith (President of Magdalen College 1998 - 2005) to compose something to set the seal on a new concert hall for the college. His hope was for 'a choral piece, which could be sung by young
people the world over in the same way that Handel's Messiah is.'
Ecce Cor Meum, an Oratorio in four movements, is scored for choir and orchestra. The text combines both English and to a lesser degree, Latin.
Paul's knowledge of Latin comes from his classical education at The Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, where he had learnt three languages by the time he was 12. Paul says: "Not all of this has been retained over the years as my path went in other directions, but my love of language remains, and as Latin is known and sung by choirs all over the world, I felt it would be appropriate to use at times during the piece."
Like many great composers Paul, started with the music and then looked for a subject that fits. Several ideas for lyrics occurred to him, but they only gelled when he took part in a concert of John Tavener's music in the
Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York. "While I was waiting to do my bit, I was looking around the church and I saw a statue, and underneath it was written 'Ecce Cor Meum.' I had done some Latin at school and I always
had a fondness for it. So I worked it out. I believe it means Behold My Heart."
In November 2001, the first version of Ecce Cor Meum was given its first preview performance by the Magdalen College Choir, which was conducted by Bill Ives at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. This was a great learning experience for Paul. "Eventually I made it all come together through correcting a lot of misapprehensions -- a lot was learned before the Sheldonian performance, but a lot of it was learned afterwards. An experienced choral composer knows that children can't be given huge sustained passages; they don't have the energy and the stamina. At the Sheldonian there was some quite hard stuff that I didn't realize because I'd done it on the synthesizer (which has endless stamina!), but during that first performance, the solo treble couldn't come on for the second half -- I think I'd used him up in the first half! These are things that people either learn because they are taught them immediately at the first lesson or you learn through the years, so it was good to go through the piece a lot of times, and we took out huge choral sections and gave them to the orchestra. If it had been a Beatles song I would have known how to do it. But this was a completely different ball game."
Produced by John Fraser, Ecce Cor Meum was recorded this year at the legendary Abbey Road Studios between March 13th and 17th. It was performed by EMI artist Kate Royal (soprano); The Boys of King's College Choir,
Cambridge; The Boys Of Magdalen College Choir, Oxford and The Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields conducted by Gavin Greenway.

MADISON SQUARE GARDEN TO COMMEMORATE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006 marks the 35th Anniversary of George Harrison and Ravi Shankar's Concert For Bangladesh. The event took place on August 1st 1971 at New York City's Madison Square Garden, and featured performances by George, Ravi Shankar, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell and Billy Preston.

Madison Square Garden will celebrate the 35th Anniversary by installing a plaque permanently in its "Walk of Fame" to commemorate this historic event. At 2pm on Tuesday, the plaque will be presented to Olivia, who said, "I know George would be happy that 35 years later the impact of his efforts are still felt and appreciated."

The plaque will be set alongside music legends such as The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead and fellow Beatle Paul McCartney. This presentation will mark the first time in Madison Square Garden history that a concert or event is honoured on the "Walk of Fame".

The concert alerted the world to the plight of the Bangladeshi people. "UNICEF is honoured to have been a part of this Concert and proud that 35 years later we are celebrating the humanitarian work of George Harrison," said Chip Lyons, President of UNICEF. "Childrens' lives, in Bangladesh and beyond, have been saved and improved thanks to the funds raised by The Concert for Bangladesh."

The film of the concert, released on DVD and CD last autumn, was recently certified 3 times platinum by the RIAA. All artists' royalties from the sales of the DVD and the CD continue to go to UNICEF. In commemoration, Ringo Starr and Ravi Shankar were presented with plaques, in New York and Los Angeles respectively.

John Lennon's Most Revolutionary Songs Collected for New Capitol/EMI Soundtrack to Controversial New Documentary Film, The U.S. vs John Lennon

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing will release the original soundtrack album to the highly-anticipated feature length documentary film, The U.S. vs John Lennon. The soundtrack, available on CD and digitally on September 26, collects John Lennon's most evocative songs, including "Imagine," "Nobody Told Me," "Instant Karma (We All Shine On)," "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," and "Power To The People," as well as two previously unreleased tracks, "Attica State," recorded live at 1971's "John Sinclair Freedom Rally" benefit concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the film's instrumental version of "How Do You Sleep." The CD and digital album packaging will include a liner notes essay written exclusively for this release by Yoko Ono Lennon. The controversial film, distributed by Lions Gate Films (Crash, Fahrenheit 9/11), will open in New York and Los Angeles theaters on September 15, followed by wide release at the end of September.

"Never in a million years, did we think that promoting World Peace could be dangerous. Were we naive? Yes, on that account, we were. John sings: 'Nobody told me there'd be days like these.' That was his true confession," says Yoko Ono Lennon, "These songs have become relevant all over again. It's almost as if John wrote these songs for what we are going through now."

The U.S. vs John Lennon follows Lennon's artistic and personal evolution between 1966 and 1976 as he broadened his personal and artistic scope, launching from his Beatles-rooted music legend pedestal into powerful, globally-resonating antiwar and social justice activism. As the Vietnam war exploded and America's youth was increasingly under attack at home for expressing its discontent, Lennon's counter-cultural activities were increasingly monitored by the FBI on behalf of President Richard Nixon's administration (Nixon himself was briefed on Lennon's activities). The film, through its captivating exploration of the government's ongoing efforts to silence John Lennon, also clearly illustrates certain parallels to today's political landscape, through insightful interviews with those who knew him best.

Living in New York City during this highly-charged period of his career, Lennon wrote many of his greatest, most culturally vital songs as he and Yoko Ono battled a constant and threatening veil of U.S. government scrutiny with inspired determination. The government's intimidating and ongoing surveillance campaign was coupled with threats of deportation for the Visa-carrying Lennon, aggressive tactics that he and Ono met with creative and more reasoned responses. In 1969, they staged their legendary 1969 "Bed-In" antiwar protests during their March honeymoon in Amsterdam and two months later in Montreal, where they were joined by friends to record "Give Peace A Chance." On December 10, 1971, Lennon and Ono headlined the "John Sinclair Freedom Rally" benefit concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan with a lightning-rod performance that turned the world's attention to the plight of John Sinclair, an American sentenced in July 1969 to nine years and six months to 10 years in prison for possession of two marijuana cigarettes. Three days later, Michigan's Supreme Court ordered Sinclair's release, and subsequently overturned his conviction. Together, Lennon and Ono personified the struggle for freedom and compassion through this fractured and wounded period of American history.

The U.S. vs John Lennon is co-written, directed and produced by LSL Productions' David Leaf and John Scheinfeld. Leaf wrote and directed the critically-acclaimed and Grammy-nominated documentary Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson & the Story of SMiLE, which premiered on Showtime last fall. Scheinfeld wrote and directed the feature-length documentary Who is Harry Nilsson (and Why is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?, currently screening at film festivals across the U.S.

The story of The U.S. vs John Lennon is told with archival film clips, illuminating interviews and Lennon's original music. David Leaf says, "We were allowed to 'strip' lead vocals from Lennon's original recordings, so that we could use his own instrumental work as the score for the movie. I think it's the first time that John's solo catalog can be heard in this way."

"I believe John would have loved this film," says Ono Lennon, "It's the kind of cool film he would have liked even if it were about somebody else. It's not tabloid, but rather it tells it like it was. 'Gimme Some Truth,' indeed. If John were here today, he would have felt good about being represented by such a film, and the fact that we took the chance to make it and present it to the world. War Is Over (If You Want It)."

Reprising John Lennon and Yoko Ono's original 1969 holiday season World Peace movement marketing campaign, fans will find "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" messages appearing on billboards in some of the world's largest cities this fall.

SEAN LENNON'S "FRIENDLY FIRE" TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 26!

ALBUM'S COMPANION FILM FEATURES LENNON, LINDSAY LOHAN, BIJOU PHILLIPS, CARRIE FISHER, ASIA ARGENTO AND MORE

WATCH THE TRAILER HERE: http://www.capitolrecords.net/seanlennon/

(New York, NY) - Friendly Fire, the sophomore solo album from Sean Lennon, will be released by Capitol Records on September 26th.

Following Into the Sun, Lennon's acclaimed 1998 solo debut, Friendly Fire is a cinematic suite of songs which share the same dizzying wealth of musical styles as its predecessor, but eschews some of its freeform tendencies for more traditional song structure and some unifying themes.

The years between albums found Lennon collaborating with everyone from his mother, Yoko Ono, to Money Mark, Deltron 3030, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Vincent Gallo, Thurston Moore, John Zorn, Ryan Adams, The Boredoms, and Ben Lee, to name a few. But they also provided him with the opportunity to let Friendly Fire evolve naturally, at its own pace, and to limit participation to talented friends, of which he's blessed with many.

"There was a long period after the first album where I felt disillusioned with the machinery of the industry," says Lennon. "It's not that I stopped recording, playing and performing, I did all of those things, just more discreetly. Friendly Fire is an experiment to see what it might be like to do music more publicly again."

Produced by Lennon, the Friendly Fire sessions really got underway when he asked producer/engineer Tom Biller (among other things Jon Brion's trusted mixer for his recordings with Fiona Apple and Kanye West, as well as the scores for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I (Heart) Huckabees) and drummer Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, Tori Amos) into the studio for two weeks of collaboration.

Where Lennon played most all instruments on his debut, the Friendly Fire sessions found him still writing most of the parts, but conjuring a shape-shifting "band" to record live to tape, mostly in single takes. Other participants included Jon Brion (organ, guitar, additional drums), Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda (piano, keyboards, bass), Harper Simon (guitar) and Bijou Phillips (background vocals), among others.

A childlike piano prelude introduces sweeping album opener "Dead Meat," the sweetest, most lush-sounding song to ever warn "In the end you're gonna learn/All you get is what you deserve." Similarly, the dark romanticism of the gentle, melodic "Parachute" intones "If I have to die tonight/I'd rather be with you."

The smoky, endearingly spooky "Tomorrow" is a cursed lovers' ballad picked up via deep-space transistor radio. Driven by handclaps and acoustic strumming, "Headlights" is most propelled by its gracefully-unfolding vocal harmonies. And a near-unrecognizable psychedelic reworking of Marc Bolan obscurity "Would I Be the One" floats and disperses before the album's final track, and perhaps its most literal, the forlorn and orchestral "Falling Out of Love."

Lennon has also produced a short film for each of the album's tracks, directed by Michele Civetta. The fantastical shorts, which together comprise a conceptual film about betrayal and the failure of love, feature appearances from Lennon and friends including Lindsay Lohan, Bijou Phillips, Asia Argento, Carrie Fisher, Devon Aoki, Jordana Brewster and others.

As for the experience of creating Friendly Fire the album versus Friendly Fire the film Lennon says, "Music is invisible. I spend a lot of time in the studio with my eyes closed. This, thankfully, was not the case with the film."

The trailer for the film can be streamed here: http://www.capitolrecords.net/seanlennon/

LOVE Premieres in Las Vegas

Friday 30th June: Over 4000 guests of Apple Corps Ltd, Cirque Du Soleil and The Mirage gather to celebrate the launch of LOVE in Las Vegas.

This historic evening started inside The Mirage where celebrities and VIPs strolled the red carpet lined with fans and photographers. Our contest winner Sabin Mills from Stafford, Virginia and his friends also made their way between the crowds along the red carpet to the Premiere.

Inside the theatre, excitement and anticipation filled the air as guests took to their seats and eagerly awaited for LOVE to begin… Backstage the cast and crew were going over a few final details, waiting for their cue to begin.

An hour and a half later, the show was over - but not the applause. A standing ovation continued as Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia stepped up on stage with the show director Dominic Champagne and music director, Sir George Martin. And the crowd responded to Paul's request for "just one special round of applause for John and George."

"I loved the show and I loved the music! I think the show is really exciting. I thought the effects, the people doing their stuff, the projections were great, too much, really! I thought it was very emotional; who knew a few years ago when the Beatles were just chatting to each other making those records that we could put it to such great use. And it was emotional because two of us aren't there. Overall, it's a festival of love. Peace and love." Ringo Starr

"I thought it was beautiful. It was fantastic." Yoko Ono

Paul met with some of the performers backstage after the show: "Good night everybody, you're all great… I used to wear some of those clothes. It's fantastic, it just gets better and better, it's just beautiful, the energy is fantastic and the love you're putting into it and the skill, beautiful, thank you very much! I don't think we can say thank you enough. Thank you!"

"It's really rare that The Beatles would let their music be used - I think that's a statement in itself as to the faith they have in Guy and his creative ability." Olivia Harrison

"Tonight is an emotional time for me because it's the culmination of a dream that I shared with one of The Beatles, and today it's coming true, so I'm very happy. George isn't here tonight but seeing Olivia and The Beatles pay tribute to that dream touches me greatly." Guy Laliberté, Founder of Cirque.

The gala party that followed ran well into the early morning hours as the creators, performers and other VIP guests celebrated this historic collaboration.

You can see photos, watch video clips and find out more about the evening here: PREMIERE AND PARTY

Many thanks.
