September 2005 - Monthly Review: A film on John Lennon’s immigration battle to remain in the US, titled “The U.S. vs. John Lennon” is being produced and is set for release in 2006. It will be co-written, directed and produced by David Leaf and John Scheinfeld and will examine events in Lennon’s life from 1966-1976.

Advance promotion for Paul’s new album proceeds with radio specials on the BBC, Clear Channel, Virgin Radio, Radio Netherlands and Capital Gold (among others). The advance reviews for the album are very favorable, with the best media response that a McCartney album has received in the past twenty (or so) years.

Paul's "Fine Line" single debuts at #20 on the UK chart.

Paul announces tour sponsorship deals with Fidelity Investments and Lexus.

Fidelity Investments provide potential new clients with a specially produced 19 track McCartney CD compilation titled “Never Stop Doing What You Love”.

The track listing and details for the “Live 8" DVDs are posted at www.live8livedvd.com.

Just six days before the beginning of his North American tour, Paul participates in the “ReAct Now! Music & Relief” event to aid victims of hurricane relief. The two hour special airs on Saturday, September 10th. Paul supplies footage of him and his band in Miami rehearsing his new single, “Fine Line”.

Paul’s acclaimed “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” album is released. It is an album with many quiet strengths showing an introspective, contemplative side to Paul’s muse. The album grows on you, with it’s beauty and depth revealed after repeat listening. It may be a challenge for some people but it rewards the listener who takes the time to appreciate it. Personally, I really like this album. The album is well crafted with an uncluttered simplicity. The degree of focus and quality control that McCartney exhibits on the disc is admirable. Paul takes a real stand and make a sincere effort to deliver a mature album of consistently high quality. It’s the natural successor to “Flaming Pie” and the kind of album I hoped Paul would produce at this point in his career.

A "Special Edition" of "Chaos and Creation" includes a 50 minute DVD. The Japanese edition of "Chaos and Creation" features a bonus track (“She Is So Beautiful”) not available on US or European editions of the album.

VH1 and VH1 Classic simultaneously air a one hour special "Chaos and Creation" on Wednesday, September 14th. The first half hour is derived from the album’s DVD. The 2nd half hour features videos from different stages of Paul’s career.

The Times (UK) runs three excerpts from Cynthia Lennon’s upcoming book on John Lennon. Julian Lennon provides the forward for the book which will be available in hardcover, paperback, CD audio, audio cassette and large print editions.

Paul McCartney’s “US” tour opens in Miami on September 10th. The event is noted for Paul’s 5 foot fall while on stage, into a piano riser.

On September 17th, BBC radio broadcasts Paul’s intimate “Sold On Song” event, recorded at Abbey Road Studios.
Paul McCartney's "Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard" debuts at No. 6 on the Billboard's Top 200 album chart with sales of 92,000 copies, giving Paul his 45th top 10 album on the Billboard chart. His last album, 2001's "Driving Rain," debuted at No. 26 with 66,000 copies and has moved 398,000 to date.

In Canada, "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" debuted at No. 5 compared to "Driving Rain" which entered the charts at No. 33.

The CBC production of "John & Yoko: Give Peace A Song" airs on Tuesday, September 27th.

Paul McCartney to sign children's book at Barnes & Noble

On Monday, October 3rd at 2:00pm, Barnes & Noble located in Rockefeller Center at 600 Fifth Ave will be hosting rock legend PAUL MCCARTNEY, who is promoting his first children?s book HIGH IN THE CLOUDS.

Nearly 10 years in the making, Paul McCartney's HIGH IN THE CLOUDS was inspired by his love of literature and the animated film "Tropic Island Hum" on which Paul collaborated with animator Geoff Dunbar and features characters from the book. In addition to the award-winning "Tropic Island Hum", he has also worked with Geoff to create the animated award-winning "Rupert And The Frog Song," and "Tuesday", based on the book by David Wiesner.

Forced to leave his woodland home, destroyed by the expansion plans of the evil Gretsch, Wirral the squirrel vows to find the fabled land of Animalia, where all the animals are said to live in freedom and without fear. Aided and abetted by Froggo the hot-air-ballooning frog, Wilhamina the plucky red squirrel, and Ratsy the streetwise rodent, Wirral's personal quest turns into a full-blown plan to save enslaved animals everywhere -- a plan that is fraught with danger.

Please join us for the signing of this grand new adventure by Paul McCartney!

Here is CNN`s Daryn Kagan with McCartney and his music for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

PAUL MCCARTNEY, MUSICIAN: Coming out with a tour, particularly after 9/11 and now after Katrina, you do feel like you`re coming in with some sort of healing influence, that people are seeing all of this tragedy on the TV and they`re just living that day in and day out, and they need a bit of a release. So often, if we`re lucky, we provide a little bit of a release. Hopefully the music will help them through their troubles. That`s what it is all about.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Speaking of loss, we are getting close to the anniversary of the death of George Harrison. You still think about him often? One of the interviews that I read said that one of the songs on the new album, you thought of him.

MCCARTNEY: Yes, there is one of the songs that, strangely, you know, I didn`t realize I was thinking of George. I was just writing a song, one of the songs on the new album, called "Friends To Go," and I started with "I`ll be waiting on the other side," thinking what am I writing about here. Is it the other side of life or just the other side of the street, you know.

And as I went on, I just got a feeling that it was a very George song. It wasn`t like I was channeling him. You know, this is the spin that gets put on it, but it wasn`t like that. It was just like, I suddenly thought this could be a George song.

KAGAN: The question I am sure you get asked many times, because you did turn 63, are you singing out there "When I Turn 64"?

MCCARTNEY: No, I`m not singing that yet, but I`ve got a nasty feeling I might be next year. My kids say to me, dad, you have got to disappear off the face of the planet --

KAGAN: For that one year?

MCCARTNEY: -- next year. Don`t be here. And I said, well, it`s either that or I`ll be right in the middle of it all. So I haven`t yet made a decision, but if you don`t see me next year, you`ll know why.

KAGAN: We heard it here first.

Anything left to do? Still many more songs in there?

MCCARTNEY: I don`t know. You know, I don`t count how many I`ve done. I just like doing it. I love what I do, and so that`s what is left to do.

The following posting is from the Ottawa Beatles Site who are generously allowing other web sites to post this notice:

TV Alert: The CBC production of "John & Yoko: Give Peace A Song" airs on September 27, 8:00 p.m.!!

What promises to be one of the best made-for-television documentaries on the recording of "Give Peace A Chance", the programs producer Paul McGrath of the CBC in an e-mail correspondence to John Whelan reveals some details as to what Beatle fans can expect from the CBC television broadcast:

"Yes broadcast date is Sept 27 at 8 p.m. The documentary is called John and Yoko: Give Peace A Song. It is a record of the day Give Peace A Chance was born and of the song's  further evolution into 2005. It is chock full of rare and first-time pictures.  We have John [and] Yoko's out-takes of the day's events, the footage not used in the Bed-In movie, donated by Yoko.

"We have more new stuff from the CBC vaults, an appearance by the only moving picture record of Pete Seeger singing the song to c. 400,000 people at the Vietnam Mobilation in Nov 1969. That many people waving their arms and singing one song is goose-bump material. (That Seeger performance is what gave the song its status in the peace movement and is to a large degree why it is still sung today.)

"We have a killer George Harrison cameo appearance on the Smothers Brothers show from Nov 15\68 which I believe has not been seen since it was broadcast. (Actually, you might be able to tell me whether that little snippet is out there on the web. I've seen many references to its existence but no indication that anybody has ever seen it since 1968. If not, fire up the recorders on Sept 27.)"

Paul McGrath, who previously produced the highly acclaimed "John and Yoko's Year of Peace" for the CBC which aired in 2002, makes note of the important appearance that Yoko Ono made in the program. Said McGrath: "She gave us such an eloquent interview that for minutes at a time the doc is in her hands. I believe she gave us the longest interview on camera, simply because she kept talking (as handed any media in more than a decade.) We were promised 20 minutes and went one hour and 20 minutes."

According to McGrath, we'll also see "Interviews as well with Tom Smothers, Andre Perry and tons of people you've never heard before, each of them with a killer story about how they happened to be seated around the bed that day for the recording."

Broadcast time: "John & Yoko: Give Peace A Song", September 27, 8:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. Viewers in different time zones should consult their local listings. Depending on location, American viewers living close to the Canada/USA border might be able to pick up the broadcast.

WORKING CLASS HERO - THE DEFINITIVE LENNON

TO BE RELEASED OCTOBER 4

MOST COMPREHENSIVE LENNON COLLECTION TO DATE
2 CD SET COMMEMORATES THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH

Capitol Records will commemorate the 65th anniversary of John Lennon's birth with the October 4th release of Working Class Hero - The Definitive Lennon. The double CD set, Executive Produced by Yoko Ono, will offer the most comprehensive collection of Lennon's hit singles and key album tracks to date - 38 songs in all, with a combined playing time of over two and one-half hours.

Born in Liverpool, England on October 9, 1940 and assassinated in New York City just over forty years later (December 8, 1980), Lennon rendered a vision of life that was simultaneously reflective, utopian and poignantly realistic. Reflecting his social activism ("Give Peace A Chance," "Power To The People," "Gimme Some Truth," "Woman Is The Nigger Of The World"), idealism ("Imagine," "Mind Games," "Instant Karma!"), his hedonistic "lost weekend," as he called the 18 months he spent separated from Yoko Ono in the early 1970's ("Nobody Loves You When You're Down And Out," "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night," the rollicking duet with Elton John that gave him his first #1 single as a solo artist), and the happiness he found in later years as a self-described "househusband,"  ("(Just Like) Starting Over," "Watching The Wheels," "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)"), Working Class Hero - The Definitive Lennon captures him in all his complexity.

Mastered from the most up-to-date sources, the collection includes material from John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970), Imagine (1971), Sometime In New York City (1972), Mind Games (1973), Walls and Bridges (1974), Rock 'N' Roll (1975), Double Fantasy (1980), Live In New York City (recorded in 1972, but not released until 1986) as well as numerous singles and tracks from Milk and Honey (1984) and Anthology (1998), the posthumous collections of Lennon's unreleased recordings.

From Yoko Ono:

"Everyone has been asking me recently if this year will be extra special for me since it's John's 65th birthday year and the 25th anniversary of that awful day. There isn't a day that goes by when I don't think about John. But still, it is very special for me too to think of John at 65, and to think what he would be doing if he was here now.

I can immediately see that he would be very, very angry at what's going on in the world today. Oh, yes. Violence, accelerated corporate manipulations and lies. He wanted the world to be a beautiful place for all of us. But it seems we have a long way to go yet for that.

Once he was honored as "The Man Of The Decade". That was 35 years ago. Now he is a man of the century and the future. His work inspires all people, and his voice reaches the whole planet.

I miss him a lot. We all miss him. His songs are now our songs, our love, and our life.

John made some great songs with beautiful music and daring words. He laid his life on the line to speak out the truth for all of us.

Enjoy this incredible selection of songs of wisdom and power, and know that John is now in the heart of each of us, helping to heal ourselves and our planet.

I love you, John. You are the one and only. Yoko"

This past week, Julian Lennon released the following statement:

Julian Lennon"As the anniversary of Dad's death approaches, I have, inevitably, started receiving many requests for interviews. I am not going to give any interviews on the subject; I genuinely feel that I have talked about Dad enough. But I do appreciate the enormous interest people have in my father and his legacy and so, in lieu of interviews, I am going to say just this:

"Dad was a great talent whose music and ideals are an inspiration to millions. Yet I have always had very mixed feelings about Dad. He was the father I loved who let me down in so many ways. Who knows how our relationship might have developed if he had not been murdered … it's painful to think that his early death robbed me of the chance for us to know each other better. What can never be taken away are his words and music, that's his legacy for me. It's in my blood for a start. Like Dad I became a musician too, and as with many other artistes in this world
his words and music continue to influence me today and probably forever more."

Also, I can direct you to two projects to which I have made a contribution. First, Mum's book. As you probably know by now, Mum has written a biography about Dad and her time with him and I have provided the Foreword. I am immensely proud of her achievement – it's an honest and truthful account of the ten years they shared together – half his adult life! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the truth, the real truth about Dad and his life with Mum. The book is called 'John' and is published on 26 September 2005.

And the second is a TV profile of Dad which will transmit on BBC Television in October. I very, very rarely take part in shows like this but I was impressed with the integrity of the company who are making it for the BBC and their commitment to making it a balanced and thoughtful programme.

I expect there will be lots of other programmes and profiles commemorating and celebrating Dad on and around 8 December … for Mum and me that day will be one of private remembrance."

‘Chaos And Creation In The Back Yard’ is a return to the basics for McCartney. The album successfully fuses his undeniable song writing talents with his unparalleled musicianship. In fact, McCartney is credited with playing the majority of the instruments on the album, which is somewhat reminiscent of “McCartney” (1970) when he was credited with playing all of the instruments. They include the drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, as well as many of the less traditional instruments such as block flute, harmonium and flugelhorn.

‘Chaos And Creation In The Backyard’ is also released as a Special Edition CD with a Bonus DVD featuring an intimate ‘Behind The Scenes Look’ into the making of new studio album.

Filmed in Los Angeles and London, the special DVD gives a rare and unprecedented look inside the mind of one of the world’s most prolific and renown songwriters. It captures McCartney working alongside producer Nigel Godrich in a way that has never been seen, as they collaborate to make McCartney’s 20th studio album.

The main feature, ‘Between Chaos And Creation,’ is a 30-minute documentary style film that tracks McCartney’s creative journey making of the new album. It takes the viewer song by song, through the album, and demonstrates his unparalleled song-writing skills and musical versatility.

DVD extras also include special performances of album tracks, the new single, ‘Fine Line,’ as well as ‘How Kind Of You.’ In addition, there is an art feature entitled ‘Line Art,’ with fine artist Brian Clarke. It’s a series of sketches put to music from the new album.

"Live 8" DVD cover artTHE GREATEST SHOWS ON EARTH TO BE RELEASED ON DVD

EMI are proud to announce the DVD release of Live 8
7 November 2005 (8 November 2005 – US)

On 7 November 2005 (8 November 2005 – US) the biggest live event DVD project of its kind will be released. Live 8 brings together performances from the amazing series of concerts which took place around the world on 2 July 2005.

Live 8 – One Day One Concert One World

The 4-disc set contains three discs of live footage taken from the Live 8 shows staged in London and Philadelphia alongside key highlights from the seven other events staged across the world. Every artist who performed at London’s Hyde Park and Philadelphia’s Museum Of Art appear on the DVD, many of them with their full sets.

“It was 20 years ago today…” Live 8 opens with U2 and Paul McCartney’s crowd-rousing rendition of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and also features Pink Floyd’s historical reunion, Robbie Williams’s show-stopping performance and Madonna’s breathtakingly energetic set. Younger artists such as Snow Patrol, The Killers and Joss Stone comfortably intertwine with rock n’ roll legends such as The Who and Sting. One-off duets come from Paul McCartney and George Michael, Stevie Wonder and Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Elton John and Pete Doherty and Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft. Disc 3 closes as the London concert closed on 2 July with the stars of Live 8 Hyde Park taking to the stage for the stunning ‘Hey Jude’ finale.

Along the way the Kaiser Chiefs waved the flag for Britain in Philadelphia and their vigorous performance is captured alongside American superstars Destiny’s Child, Bon Jovi, Black Eyed Peas and soul legend Stevie Wonder.

Also threaded through the UK and US acts are performances from artists who appeared at the Live 8 concerts in Rome, Paris, Berlin, Toronto, Johannesburg and Moscow. Single disc sets for the French, German, Italian and Canadian Live 8 concerts have also been produced. These will focus further on each country’s concert and will be available globally.

“I hope this will be the biggest selling DVD of all time. It deserves to be. More importantly perhaps, it should be, for it will help us achieve our goal of changing the lives of the extreme poor for the better and making our generation the one that helped end the disgrace of poverty.” Says Live 8 organiser Sir Bob Geldof.

Money raised from sales of the Live 8 DVD will go to the Band Aid Trust for the relief of hunger and poverty in Africa.

Live 8 was held on 2 July 2005. Nine simultaneous, free concerts starring the cream of international rock and pop artists were staged in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Tokyo, Moscow, Toronto, Johannesburg and Philadelphia. The concerts acted as a starting point for The Long Walk To Justice in support of the Make Poverty History and Global Call To Action campaigns and was timed to focus attention on the critical decisions made by the G8 summit four days later.

“You’re such a lovely audience, we’d like to take you home with us” sang Bono. Now the million-strong live audience and 5 billion viewers around the world can take Live 8 home with them…

Paul McCartney and Fidelity Investments Announce U.S./Canada Marketing Partnership

Music Legend Debuts in New Fidelity Ad Launching Tomorrow in Both Markets

BOSTON/TORONTO, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - He has been a Beatle, Wing, painter, poet, father, producer, knight, and if that weren't enough, Paul McCartney will be featured in an international advertising campaign to help Fidelity Investments address the ever-changing financial needs of investors. The campaign debuts Thursday, September 8 with a 30-second television ad in Canada on English language television during CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on the CTV Network and in the U.S. during a special edition of ABC's Monday Night Football. The ad will debut on French language television in Canada the week of September 12th on several season premieres including Les Invincibles and Zone Libre on SRC.
The ad, titled "This is Paul," takes viewers on a chronological tour of McCartney's life and notable accomplishments. The addition of a celebrity is a new dimension to Fidelity's award-winning campaign that tells the stories of investors with actual photos of their personal milestones using musical backdrops that appeal to all ages.
Created by Fidelity's agency, Arnold Worldwide, the ad is one element of a partnership between Paul McCartney and Fidelity that includes sponsorship of McCartney's sold-out, 11-week concert tour launching September 16 in Miami and coinciding with the September 13 release of his 20th studio album, "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard". The tour stops at Toronto's Air Canada Center on October 10th. The partnership also includes a campaign to raise awareness and funds to benefit school music education programs that will be announced later
this month.
"I'm really pleased to be working with Fidelity Investments," said Paul McCartney. "We have a lot in common - a commitment to helping people, a dedication to the arts, and a belief that you should never stop doing what you
love."
"Generations have grown up with Paul McCartney," said Robert L. Reynolds, vice chairman and chief operating officer, Fidelity Investments. "People continue to be inspired by how he approaches life -- with confidence, innovation and a long-term view. He's the perfect partner for Fidelity to help investors transition to the next chapter in their lives."
"Investors approaching new life stages on both sides of the border share similar opportunities and desires," said Robert Strickland, president, Fidelity Investments Canada. "They also face the same need for smart financial planning. Fidelity is committed to helping investors work with their advisors to compose their own financial futures."
After its debut, "This is Paul" will air in Canada on major networks including CBC, CTV, Global, SRC, TQS and TVA as well as various cable stations. The campaign will continue in national newspapers in both Canada and the U.S., as well as print and spot TV in key local tour markets to coincide with McCartney's concert dates.

Paul McCartney To Release ‘Chaos And Creation In The Backyard’ Special Edition CD and Bonus DVD Featuring An Intimate Behind The Scenes Look Into The Making Of New Studio Album

In-Stores September 12th 2005

Paul McCartney will release a Special Edition CD/DVD of his soon to be released new studio album ‘Chaos And Creation In The Backyard’. The Special Edition, due in-stores on Monday, September 12th, will include a bonus DVD packed with exclusive, never-before-seen behind the scenes footage, as well as special intimate performances of music from the new album.

‘Chaos And Creation In The Back Yard’ is a mix of up-tempo piano driven McCartney instant classics such as ‘Fine Line’ and ‘Promise To You Girl’ and more introspective darker tracks such as ‘At The Mercy,’ ‘Too Much Rain’ and ‘Riding To Vanity Fair.’ One of the many highlights is a track entitled, ‘Jenny Wren,’ which Paul describes as “daughter of Blackbird,” as well as ‘Follow Me,’ which McCartney debuted at The Glastonbury Festival, while on his ’04 Summer European Tour.

Paul McCartney is currently preparing for his sold out ‘US’ tour of North America, which kicks off on September 16th in Miami.

Reuters/Hollywood Reporter: John Lennon activism docu eyes 2006 release

Thu Sep 1, 2005 7:11 AM ET

By Nicole Sperling

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - A documentary about John Lennon's transformation into an antiwar activist has started preproduction, and aims to reach theaters next year, distributor Lions Gate Films said Wednesday.

The release of "The U.S. vs. John Lennon" will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the former Beatle being granted permanent residency in the United States despite the best efforts of the U.S. government.

The film, which will center on Lennon's life from 1966-76, has received support and cooperation from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. It will be cowritten, directed and produced by David Leaf ("Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile") and John Scheinfeld (the recently completed "Who Is Harry Nilsson (and Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?").
